About Master’s Program,

While every reasonable effort has been made to ensure this information is accurate and current, if there is a requirement not listed on this page that is listed in the official university calendar, the published Memorial University of Newfoundland Calendar will be considered the final and accurate authority.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers graduate programs leading to four degrees:

Mathematics:
Option 1. Research based program. This programme consists of graduate courses and a thesis. A full-time student is expected to complete the degree requirements in two years.
Option 2. Course based program. This is an intensive three semester (one year) programme based on graduate courses and a project. No new admission in Winter.

Statistics:
This programme consists of graduate courses and a thesis. Full-time students should complete the degree requirements within two years.

All Masters programmes start only in the Fall term and applications made before the Fall deadline will be considered only for the coming Fall term, regardless of the date of application.

Master’s Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,

An applicant to this programme shall normally have completed a bachelors degree in statistics or cognate area with strong concentration of statistic courses.

In addition to the previous requirements, each M.Sc. student is required to present at least a seminar on a topic chosen by his/her supervisor before the completion of their programme. All thesis based Masters students are required to present a seminar on the thesis topic before submitting the thesis for review.

Subject to the recommendation of the supervisory committee and the approval of the Graduate Studies Committee one of the elective courses from the departmental course offerings can be replaced by an equivalent 3-credit hours course offered in another department.

Master’s Funding Coverage,

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics endeavours to ensure a reasonable minimum level of financial support for all its graduate students, subject to their satisfactory progress.

Research based programs. Students admitted into our research graduate programs with full funding receive a minimum of $18,310 annually at the Master’s level, or $21,310 at the Doctoral level. This support generally comes from a combination of the following sources:

  • Graduate Fellowship support from the School of Graduate Studies
  • Teaching Assistantship duties
  • Research Grant held by the student’s supervisor

Supervisors have the discretion to vary the amount of their contribution, and so the financial packages offered often exceed the minimum levels indicated above.

Graduate Fellowship. Fellowship support from the School of Graduate Studies is awarded on a competitive basis. To be eligible for fellowship support, applicants who have attended North American schools must have obtained an average mark of 80% in required courses. Eligibility for applicants coming from overseas is determined by the School of Graduate Studies on a case by case basis.
Since fellowship monies are limited, some students are offered admission with only partial funding (in the vicinity of $6,000 to $7,000).

Teaching Assistantships. In return for an assistantship, a student is expected to perform one of the following duties:  i) marking assignments, ii) delivering lab sessions, iii) assisting undergraduate students in the Math Help Centre, and iv) invigilating exams. These duties will be kept small so that they do not interfere substantially with the student’s graduate program. The current assistanceship rate in our department is $5,310.

Graduate Instructorship. Whenever possible, qualified doctoral students may hold a Graduate Instructorship, which provide $5,144 per course taught (in addition to the financial support already being provided).

Application Requirement,

  1. An official record of courses and grades earned (i.e., a transcript, if such a document is issued by your university). Documents must be sent directly by the issuing university.
  2. Certification of completion of degrees (if not noted on the transcript). Photocopies are not acceptable unless they have been certified by the appropriate university or legal official as true copies of the original documents.
  3. Notarized English translations of all supporting documentation, including but not limited to, transcripts, certification of degree and diplomas. (This applies only to applicants who have completed programs at universities which issue documents in languages other than English or French.)Proof of proficiency in the English language. See below for acceptable forms of proof.
  4. Two letters of appraisal, at least one of which must be from an academic. The letters should be submitted electronically at http://www.mun.ca/become/graduate/apply.
