About Master’s Program,

The field of communication promotes the effective and ethical practice of human communication. The discipline is interested in how audiences interpret symbolic meaning and the social, cultural, political, and economic dimensions of speech and language in context. Communication studies draw from humanistic, social scientific, and aesthetic inquiry to investigate how people use messages to generate meanings within and across various contexts, cultures, channels, and media.

As represented by the National Communication Association (NCA), the discipline is “Dedicated to fostering and promoting free and ethical communication.” NCA “promotes the widespread appreciation of the importance of communication in public and private life, the application of competent communication to improve the quality of human life and relationships, and the use of knowledge about communication to solve human problems”

Teachers and scholars in the Department of Communication at University of Cincinnati focus on media, rhetoric, public communication, interpersonal, public relations, and organizational communication. Topics include media effects, health and environmental communication, risk and science, leadership and advocacy, social and personal identity, new media, politics, and more.

Master’s Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,

For our graduate programs, we welcome applications from students who hold a bachelor’s degree (or higher) from a college or university accredited by accrediting agencies recognized by the U.S. Department of Education for Title IV purposes or the international equivalent. It is recommended that applicants have at least a average in undergraduate course work (or otherwise give evidence of promise that is judged satisfactory by the admitting program).

Each graduate program is responsible for setting application requirements and admission criteria beyond the minimum requirements set by the university (outlined below). Programs set their application deadlines, and they set their own schedule for making admission decisions. Programs have the authority to require certain pre-admission examinations, to require the satisfactory completion of certain coursework prior to admission, and to establish other admission requirements. Admissions decisions are made by the program, and those decisions are final.

Your application, application fee, and all required materials must be submitted by the program’s deadline in order to be considered for review.

Master’s Funding Coverage,

Certain programs provide funding for the majority of their incoming students. If you wish to seek alternative or additional funding, check out the funding opportunities below.

Learn about the many graduate fellowship opportunities, including national and international fellowships. Fellowships provide funding that allows students to concentrate exclusively on their studies. Please contact your program of interest to inquire about college- or department-based fellowships.

Many UC graduate programs encourage Fulbright students to apply. For these specific programs, if a Fulbright student is accepted for admission, they will receive a 100% tuition scholarship from the graduate program for the student’s grant period.

The Graduate College also offers awards to cover the single-student cost of UC Student Health Insurance. All eligible GAs and fellows may receive the Graduate Student Health Insurance (GSHI) Award. The Graduate College also offers a limited number of GSHI Award for Part-Time/Non-GA Students.

The Graduate College offers other awards to recognize graduate students’ excellence in scholarship and teaching. Please visit the Award Opportunities page to see more information about awards and fellowships directly managed by the Graduate Colleges.
