A program that offers specialized instruction in fiction, documentary, alternative cinema, and a separate stream in screenwriting.
York University’s Graduate Program in Film/Cinema and Media Studies is recognized internationally as one of Canada’s most innovative and dynamic film programs, providing students with a unique integration of cinema and media studies, hands-on skills, critical theory, and state-of-the-art production resources and pedagogy. Situated in the celebrated School of Arts, Media, Performance and Design, which includes departments of computational arts, dance, design, music, theatre, and art history & visual arts, our graduate programs actively facilitate cross-disciplinary collaborations and research through shared courses, joint creation initiatives, and a dynamic year-long program of public lectures and events. Following its commitment to social justice, the department of Cinema and Media Arts is in process of implementing an Action Plan Addressing Anti-Black Racism and the Colonization of Indigenous Peoples in Canada. The program’s commitment to DEDI (Decolonization, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion) is central to our academic and creative endeavours, fostering meaningful dialogue that drives positive change.

Our graduate production area features a team of award-winning faculty members whose expertise, and ongoing research/practice spans Fiction, Alternative and Documentary filmmaking and new media. We are dedicated to helping our students achieve their highest creative potential.
The principal goal of our program is to immerse students in a program of study that best meets their overall academic, creative and professional goals. The required courses are intended to enhance the range and depth of a student’s skills and knowledge. The program is committed to providing the opportunity for students to enhance their experience by choosing from a selection of elective courses.
All those earning an MFA Degree must complete 7 half courses and a thesis, consisting of creative work on film, video, digital, and a written component.

Production students must complete at least one Cinema and Media Studies 3.0 credit course.

For students with no Employment component in their funding package, Healthcare coverage will be provided via YUGSA. There is a charge associated with this coverage—A healthcare bursary of $1,000/academic year is provided
For students with an Employment component in their funding package, Healthcare Benefit Coverage is included through CUPE 3903—there is no charge to students
