About Master’s Program,
The Master of Music Education on-line program for licensed music educators provides an opportunity to study current issues in music education. Students may begin in the fall, spring or summer.
MM in Education students take courses in:
- Curriculum
- Evaluation
- Psychology of music
- Research
- Foundations of music education
- Electives such as educational technology, music theory pedagogy, conducting, applied music lessons, education administration, etc.
This degree is offered in a fully online format, but students may opt to take elective classes on-campus.
Priority application deadline for admission and assistantship consideration is March 1.
Master’s Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
In addition to the overall Graduate School requirements above, an individual applying to a master’s program must also have a minimum 2.8 GPA (on a scale in which an A is a 4.0) for the last 60 hours of undergraduate work (approximately the junior and senior years).
Many graduate programs require a higher GPA or may require the GRE or GMAT.

The following documents need to be sent to the Office of Admissions.
- English translation(s) of official transcript(s), verified with fresh seals and signatures
- Declaration of Finances
- Official English Language Exam Score (TOEFL or IELTS). The minimum iBT TOEFL score is 79. The minimum overall IELTS score is 6.5. Official scores need to be sent to Illinois State directly from ETS (TOEFL) or the testing center which administered the test (IELTS).
