About Master’s Program,
The Department offers a master’s program leading to an MA in Economics. This program prepares students for positions in both the public and private sectors and for further academic training.
The program is typically completed in eight to twelve months and contains rigorous training in microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory, and econometrics, as well as elective courses in a wide range of applied fields. Students can also pursue a concentration in financial economics or a collaborative specialization in data science or African studies.
Admission to the Collaborative Specialization in Data Science is at present available only to current Carleton students who are registered in one of the participating master’s programs of which the MA in Economics is one.
Master’s Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
While each program has its own minimum requirements, the following will give you a guideline to determine your eligibility to submit an application.
The minimum requirement for admission into the M.A. program is an undergraduate honours degree in economics with a B+ (77-79%) average, or the Carleton University minimum grade point average (GPA) of 9.00 out of a maximum of 12.00.

Master’s Funding Coverage,
Successful applicants to our master’s program may be offered a teaching assistantship worth $12,085 and/or scholarships of between $2,000 and $10,000.
- program: Your chances of receiving financial assistance are greatest if your undergraduate degree is from a Canadian university and your undergraduate average is A- or higher.
Students may be offered: a teaching assistantship valued at $12,000; a graduate scholarship of between $2,000 and $10,000 for (domestic) M.A. students or between $5,000 and $15,000 for (domestic and international) Ph.D. students; and, if eligible, an entrance scholarship of $2,000 for domestic M.A. students or $3,000 for domestic Ph.D. students.
