About Master’s Program,
Wake Forest University’s M.S. in Mathematics program provides an opportunity to study a wide array of areas of mathematics with faculty members committed to both excellent teaching and excellent research. Students can choose to write a thesis under the direction of a faculty member, or select the non-thesis option requiring more coursework. The department offers an average of more than 10 graduate-level courses every semester, including topics courses.
The program is small, and the students make strong connections with faculty and with their peers. The student-faculty ratio is close to 1:1, and the students have access to a lounge designated for graduate students. The two-year master’s program is intended either as a terminal master’s degree, or as a stepping stone to a Ph.D. program. Some of our graduates have taken jobs in education, government, and finance. Others have gone on to Ph.D. programs in areas such as Mathematics, Statistics, Education, Physics, and Computer Science. About 60% of our master’s students receive financial support in the form of a teaching assistantship. TAs do not need to pay tuition, and are paid a annual stipend of $18,450 for the 2024-2025 academic year in return for 15 hours per week of work supporting the teaching efforts of our faculty.
Master’s Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
Candidates for admissions to the Master of Science Program in the Department of Mathematics should have completed at least thirty-three semester hours of mathematics and statistics at an accredited college or university. At least fifteen of these hours should require as a prerequisite two semesters of calculus or a semester of linear algebra. Most successful applicants have taken three semesters of calculus (through multivariable calculus), linear algebra, abstract algebra (or modern algebra) and advanced calculus (or other advanced courses in analysis). Applicants who do not have this preparation may be required to take additional preparatory courses. Prior experience with computing is helpful but not required.
Master’s Funding Coverage,
There are funds available to support graduate studies. The department awards assistantships, and partial scholarships through the graduate school. During the 2024-2025 academic year the full Teaching Assistant stipend is $18,450. Students who receive a partial scholarship are responsible for the balance of their tuition, which is $9662.50 for the 2024-2025 academic year. Additionally, students who are not on an assistantship are eligible to work for the Math & Stats Center on an hourly basis.
