About Master’s Program,

The MA in English and the MFA in Creative Writing provide nationally recognized graduate programs in the humanities. The PhD in Media, Art, and Text, a joint endeavor of the Department of English, the School of the Arts and the Robertson School of Media and Culture, prepares students primarily to teach at the college or university level, although some pursue careers in related media fields.

The Department of English offers a 30-hour master’s degree in English with an additional research option for those who desire to conduct a thesis project. Designed for students seeking study beyond a bachelor’s degree, the program prepares graduates subsequently to pursue a doctorate, teach in secondary or higher education, or obtain other positions in the public and private sector.

The Master of Arts in English requires 30 graduate credit hours. Those who pursue a thesis may use up to six credit hours towards the degree. Courses are taken primarily within the department, although appropriate coursework in other departments may be counted toward the degree with permission of the MA director. All master’s students, regardless of concentration, are encouraged to expand their understanding and knowledge of literature and writing, and the degree requirements are designed with that breadth in mind. Full-time students generally complete the program in two years, part-time students in two to five.

Master’s Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,

The MA in English, a 30-hour program, is a flexible degree program that enables students to develop intellectually in a stimulating and supportive environment.

The MA in English is designed for students pursuing advanced English studies, and students may choose to focus their coursework in either literature or writing and rhetoric.

The MA in English with a thesis option is designed for students pursuing advanced English studies with an emphasis on research, criticism, and methodology.

Master’s Funding Coverage,

Select students in the MA graduate programs are funded by graduate assistantships available through the Department of English.

These are awarded on a competitive basis and are generally renewable for up to two years.

The graduate assistantship (GA) is the MA program’s primary source of funding for its students. Currently, MA assistantships include a stipend of $14,000 but do not cover tuition. While most graduate assistants will be assigned to a professor teaching a large section of an introductory course (typically ENGL 215), from time to time graduate assistants are assigned to help with faculty research projects.

For the fall 2024 admissions cycle, the MA program will consider all full-time applicants for a limited number of possible stipend-only graduate teaching assistantship positions. Decisions about assistantships will be made based on the following criteria: academic success in relevant courses, quality of writing sample, promise of teaching success, and area of interest.
