About Master’s Program,

The MASc degree is a thesis-based program where students are required to complete courses in addition to writing and defending a thesis.

Also called the “Research Masters,” the MASc has a nominal duration of 24 months (6 semesters) after the Bachelor’s degree. The MASc program consists of three one-term graduate courses and a dissertation based on research completed under the supervision of a professor. The dissertation must be an original contribution to chemical engineering and must be defended at an oral examination.

Master’s Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,   

Honours Bachelor’s Degree (4 Year) in Engineering, Sciences, or equivalent.

Min B+ (77-79%)

Applicants are required to submit evidence of their proficiency in the English language as part of their application. The most common evidence is a score on one of the following exams:

  • TOEFL: Faculty of Engineering a minimum score of 88 (internet-based) or 230 on the (computer-based) or 570 (paper-based)
  • IELTS (Academic): minimum overall score of 6.5, with at least 5.5 in each section

Master’s Funding Coverage,

Many graduate students at McMaster are eligible for financial support, such as teaching assistantships, research funds, University graduate scholarships, external scholarships and bursaries.

As of September 2024, the Faculty of Engineering is introducing a minimum funding package for all incoming full-time domestic and international research-based Master’s students.* This new minimum amount is $19,500 plus tuition. Many programs have support levels in excess of this amount. Please contact the graduate recruitment office to find out more.

A Master’s student is usually funded for their first three to six terms depending on the department and whether admitted under the Accelerated Option.
