About Master’s Program,
The Master of City and Regional Planning (MCRP) degree is awarded after the successful completion of 48 semester hours. The MCRP degree establishes credentials for certified planning practice and is fully accredited by the Planning Accreditation Board (PAB).
Useful Resources
The Planning Program at The University of Memphis offers a wide range of elective courses in topics like Housing Policy, Sustainability, Economic Development, Transportation Planning, GIS, Environmental Planning, and GIS. In addition to planning electives, other departments have courses regularly recommended for planning students. Some of these include Anthropology, Civil Engineering, Criminal Justice, Economics, Earth Sciences, Public Health, Political Science, Public Administration, Real Estate, and Sociology.
Master’s Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
- Applicant must possess a bachelor’s degree. Transcripts are required for review.
- Applicant must have earned an acceptable grade point average, typically a minimum of 2.75 on a scale of 4.0. The department may make exceptions for students whose overall GPA does not adequately reflect their ability to succeed.
- Applicant must demonstrate an appropriate motivation for studying City and Regional Planning and articulate appropriate career and/or community aspirations through a personal statement.
Meeting the minimum department standards does not entitle an applicant to admission. Meeting such standards only insures consideration of the application.

Master’s Funding Coverage,
The Graduate Program in City & Regional Planning offers Graduate Assistantships for students who assist with faculty research and community projects, or who work in placements with nonprofit and local government agencies. Assistantships provide tuition remission in addition to a small monthly stipend. The number of positions available each year depends on University funding as well as external grants and contracts. Assistantships are awarded on a competitive basis.

After completing an application for admission, individuals who would also like to be considered for an assistantship should submit the following material:
- A statement of 500 words that describes how your specific skill sets, educational background, and past experiences make you qualified for an assistantship and how you will balance the demands of full-time graduate coursework with the responsibilities of an assistantship
- 2 letters of reference from former professors and/or employers (If reference letters are uploaded with your application for admission, you do notneed to send separate letters for the GA application.)
Deadline: In order to receive full consideration for Graduate Assistantships, applications must be received by March 1.
Note: Graduate Assistantships are not typically available for students beginning their studies in the Spring semester.
