Fully Funded Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (SMME) at MIT

About PhD Program,

We prepare students to become innovative technological leaders in industry, academia, government, and society – leaders whose visions are founded upon fundamental knowledge, uncompromising analysis, creativity, passion, and ethics. Our graduates go on to a vast array of careers in product design, research, management, medicine, government, teaching, public service, and entrepreneurship.

PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,

To qualify for a graduate degree, applicants are expected to have at least an undergraduate-level exposure to most of the core MechE disciplines (solid mechanics, dynamics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, materials, control, design and manufacturing), and to be familiar with basic electric circuits and electromagnetic field theory.  Admitted students who are deemed deficient in these areas may be asked to make up courses in certain areas before they graduate.  The make-up courses may be at the undergraduate-level (in which case they are relatively elementary and usually cannot be applied toward graduate credit), or at the graduate-level (in which case they carry graduate credit).

PhD Funding Coverage,

The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers three types of financial assistance to graduate students: research assistantships, teaching assistantships, and fellowships. The majority of students in the ME department are supported by research assistantships (RA). Research assistants are appointed by faculty members to perform research on a well-defined project typically sponsored by an external agency (e.g., NSF, DOD, DOE, NIH, Industry,…). The research is almost always structured so that it constitutes a major part of the student’s SM or PhD thesis. A full time RA appointment provides a full tuition scholarship (i.e. covers tuition) plus a stipend. (Please refer to the Graduate Guide for further details on Research Assistantships.)

The Department of Mechanical Engineering also offers a limited number of Teaching Assistantships. A TA position provides full tuition and a monthly stipend. (Please refer to the Graduate Guide for details on the responsibilities of a TA position.)

A number of students in the department are supported by fellowships from external agencies. Departmental and Institute fellowships are awarded by the Departmental Graduate Committee. The selection of fellowship candidates is merit-based, and typically reserved for students admitted directly into the PhD program. Most fellowships are for one year or less; fellowship students are strongly encouraged to seek a supervisor and a research project as soon as possible.

Application Requirement,

  • Statement of Objectives
  • Minimum of three letters of recommendation
  • Uploaded official/unofficial copies of transcripts.  We will require official transcripts upon admission.
  • GRE Not Requiredexcept for applicants to the 2N program (Naval Construction and Engineering). Please refer to 2N admissions information or faculty for admissions details as this program may have additional requirements.
  • IELTS (preferred) or TOEFL for international students whose native language is not English. Note, we accept the Academic IELTS only (not General Training). Minimum acceptable score for IELTS = 7.0; TOEFL = 100 IBT.  Please ask British Council to send us the official IELTS score or ETS to send us the official TOEFL score (Inst. code 3514 and Dept. code 68). We will accept the TOEFL Home Edition as long as the result is officially sent to us from TOEFL directly.
