About Master’s Program,
The M.A. program in AAADS provides a theoretical base of knowledge and a context for analyzing African American and diaspora experiences. This experience can be invaluable in further graduate studies or within a wide array of careers. We strive to:
- offer a deep analysis of African American issues
- expose you to both historical and current methodological approaches
- examine issues in their complexity throughout the African diaspora
- help you refine your critical and problem-solving skills in both the humanities and social sciences
- extend a strong foundation for those going into a doctoral program
- prepare our students for careers in administration, teaching, communication, and social service
Master’s Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
The program is open to any eligible student with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college. Applicants must have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0. Letters of recommendation, a brief personal essay, and GRE scores are the main sources of information upon which decisions will be made.
You must apply for admission to the master’s programs of both African American and African Diaspora Studies and the school of the corresponding joint degree, meeting the admissions criteria established for each. The two degrees must be awarded at the same time.
Master’s Funding Coverage,
Funding your graduate education requires research from you and support from others. We work with our graduate students to help them make this investment in their future, directing them to the resources on campus and elsewhere that help them find the funds to complete their degrees.
Top incoming AAADS graduate students may be awarded fellowships to support their study at IU. These prestigious awards carry at least one year of a guaranteed living stipend and full tuition remission, followed by at least two years of either further fellowship support or guaranteed associate instructor positions, also with a stipend and full tuition remission.
