Learn the fundamental theoretical and practical issues confronting African people with the Master of Arts in Africology and African American Studies in the College of Liberal Arts at Temple University. Gain an advanced understanding of the dynamics, experiences and traditions of people of African descent through a specialized curriculum that emphasizes self-guided studies and collaborative research opportunities.
The Africology and African American Studies MA is informed by the African-centered/Afrocentric paradigms in relation to other perspectives in Africana studies. Students in this 30-credit master’s program can focus on several different areas,
Master’s Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
Applicants who earned their baccalaureate degree from an institution where the language of instruction was other than English, with the exception of those who subsequently earned a master’s degree at a U.S. institution, must report scores for a standardized test of English that meet the following minimums.
- TOEFL iBT: 79
- IELTS Academic: 6.5
- PTE Academic: 53
Master’s Funding Coverage,
Undergraduate and graduate students in the Africology and African American Studies Department are eligible to be nominated for the following awards and scholarships. Superior academic achievement is a prerequisite for nomination.
The Frances Ellen Watkins Harper Award is given to a successful student who best represents the department’s commitment to community work and public action. Harper was a Black abolitionist, suffragist, poet, temperance activist, teacher, public speaker and writer. One of the first African American women to be published in the United States in 1845, Harper became a public figure who championed Black women’s suffrage and educational goals in 19th century Philadelphia.
