Fully Funded Master’s in Anthropology at Texas State University

About Master’s Program,

Texas State University offers a thesis-based Master of Arts degree in anthropology. Students may focus their studies in any of the major fields of anthropology; archaeology, biological anthropology and cultural anthropology.

The department invites applications from well-qualified students who wish to pursue research in any area of anthropology.

Students learn to think critically, communicate effectively and apply their anthropological expertise to issues of global concern.

The Department of Anthropology at Texas State prepares M.A. students for their future endeavors. M.A. students regularly take part in field schools and internships, collaborate with faculty on research projects, work with professionals on applied projects, present their research at professional conferences, and publish their work in academic journals.

Master’s Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,   

  • baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited university. (Non-U.S. degrees must be equivalent to a four-year U.S. Bachelor’s degree. In most cases, three-year degrees are not considered. Visit ourInternational FAQs for more information.)
  • a copy of an official transcript from each institutionwhere course credit was granted
  • a 3.0 overall GPA or a 3.0 GPA in your last 60 hoursof undergraduate course work (plus any completed graduate courses)

Master’s Funding Coverage,

Departmental Graduate Instructional Assistantships (GIA): Many of our incoming M.A. students receive partial funding (10 hour positions) through the Department of Anthropology’s GIA appointments. GIA appointments are evaluated based on a student’s GPA, the number of students who have collectively been accepted, the number of positions allotted, and departmental needs. Please note: you do not need to do anything to apply for these GIA positions; you are automatically considered as part of each incoming class cohort.

Travel Funding: The Department of Anthropology, the College of Liberal Arts, and the Graduate College offer limited travel funding for M.A. students presenting the results of their research at professional conferences.

Faculty Funding: Occasionally, individual faculty members also have funds via grants, contracts, or projects to provide scholarships and other forms of funding to M.A. students. Discuss opportunities for this type of funding with your thesis mentor.
