About Master’s Program,
The focus of USF’s 24-unit Master of Science in Chemistry program is hands-on lab research with full-time faculty. Students can start the graduate program each year beginning in the fall (late August) or spring (late January) semesters.
The program is intended for students with an undergraduate degree in chemistry or biochemistry. If a student is lacking a proper foundation for graduate work in chemistry, then some advanced undergraduate coursework may be required.
Students are required to complete 24 units of academic credit, including a substantial thesis based on original research work completed under the direction of one of our professors. The typical length of the program is two and a half years. Any courses taken must be graduate or upper-division undergraduate courses. Students typically complete six units each semester, which may be comprised entirely of research-based units.
Master’s Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
Applicants should have a minimum “B-” (2.7) overall average in their upper-division courses and a “B” (3.0) average in upper-division courses taken in the field of chemistry.
Any applicant whose undergraduate preparation does not include a complete foundation for graduate work in the field of chemistry will be required to devote time to specified undergraduate courses.
During the first semester of a student’s residence in good academic standing, the student, the research adviser and graduate director will decide on the program of study.
Master’s Funding Coverage,
Students admitted to the Master of Science in Chemistry program receive generous financial assistance from the Department of Chemistry. All admitted students receive a full-tuition scholarship for their graduate studies.
Most graduate students are also awarded a teaching assistantship of approximately $8,000 per year.
All applicants admitted to the program, both U.S. and international students, are considered for teaching assistantships when the admission applications are reviewed. There is no separate application for this financial assistance.
The Chemistry Department Summer Research Fellowships supporting students conducting research in USF chemistry department research groups. Awardees receive $2,000 towards a summer stipend.
