About Master’s Program,  

The Master of Engineering (MEng)  provides continuing and advanced education for recent graduates and engineers in professional practice

CivMin’s MEng program in civil engineering provides graduate students with the tools to succeed in professional practice. The program consists of coursework and an optional project conducted under the supervision of a CivMin faculty member. Students have the option to complete the MEng program on a full-time, extended full-time or part-time basis.

Master’s Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,   

MASc:  Completion of an undergraduate degree equivalent to a four-year University of Toronto degree, with a minimum final year GPA of mid-B (3.0/4.0 or 75%).

MEng:  Completion of an undergraduate degree equivalent to a four-year University of Toronto degree, with a minimum final year GPA of mid-B (3.0/4.0 or 75%).

MEngCEM:  Completion of an undergraduate degree equivalent to a four-year University of Toronto degree, with a minimum final year GPA of mid-B (3.0/4.0 or 75%).  In addition, you must have at least one year of work/professional experience.  This can include co-op or practicum experience obtained during your undergraduate degree.

English Language Proficiency (ELP) Requirement

The ELP requirements for admission to our programs differs from those outlined on the School of Graduate Studies website.  For our graduate programs, you must provide an official score from a test recognized by the School of Graduate Studies, unless any of the following exemptions apply to you:

  • You are a Canadian citizen who studied at a Canadian university where the language of instruction is French
  • You completed your admitting degree in Canada or one of the following countries/regions: Australia, the Bahamas, Barbados, Botswana, Ghana, Guyana, Hong Kong, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Malta, Namibia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Sierra Leone, Singapore, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, United Kingdom, United States of America, Zambia, and Zimbabwe

Note that official scores are not required at the time of admission, however, those admitted must meet the requirement prior to the start of their program.

Master’s Funding Coverage,

MEng students do not receive a funding package and are required to self-fund their program.

MASc and PhD students receive the following minimum financial support ‐

  • MASc students: $18,500 plus tuition and fees per year, for up to 2 years beyond the bachelor’s degree
  • PhD students: $20,000 plus tuition and fees per year, for up to 4 years beyond the master’s degree
  • PhD Direct Entry (Fast track Bachelor’s to PhD) – 5 years of guaranteed funding beyond the bachelor’s degree
  • Flexible-Time PhD students do not normally receive financial support from the department

Packages are made up of Scholarships, Fellowships, and Research Assistantships.

  • University Fellowships are issued in sessional installments corresponding with the number of sessions in which a student is registered (i.e. 12 months of registration results in 3 installments of University Fellowship in September, January, and May respectively).
  • Research Assistantships (RA) are paid in monthly installments.
  • All scholarships and awards greater than $3000 are used to replace part of the minimum funding package. Please refer to the tables below.
  • Students must be registered full-time and in good academic standing to maintain their financial support.
  • Students are responsible for paying their fees from the total amounts listed below by the tuition fee payment deadline.

Application Requirement,

Two references, requested and received directly through the online application system. Note that we will only review two references, even if more than two are provided.  The following are acceptable referees:

Academic: an instructor or professor for a course/s you completed and can assess your ability and suitability for your proposed program of study, or program coordinator or director who is familiar with your academic performance

Research: a professor or “principal investigator” who supervised your research and can comment on your research skills and abilities

Professional:  a supervisor who oversaw your work during an internship or work experience related to your proposed program of study, and can comment on your strengths and the relevance of your proposed program to your career goals

Scanned copy of transcripts, that can be from a student information system. We will ask for official transcripts from those who are admitted to one of our programs.

Research Statement (MASc, PhD), two pages in length, describing your research interests, and how completing a research-based graduate program will further your career and personal goals.

English Language Proficiency (ELP) scores may be required, depending on your academic background. If required, enter your scores into the application system.  Please review our admission requirements to determine if you are required to submit an official ELP score to be considered for admission.  You do not need to submit official scores to the University at the time of application.

GRE scores are not required for admission to our programs.
