About Master’s Program

The Department of English at the University of Louisville proudly offers a Master’s degree in English. Our M.A. program offers advanced training in literary studies, with options for coursework in creative writing, rhetoric and composition, and professional writing. This program prepares our students to go on to a Ph.D. program in literary studies, rhetoric and composition, creative writing, cultural studies, or related fields. Completing our program will also prepare you for any career in writing, publishing, research, business, education, or non-profits.

Master’s Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,

You are pursuing a program of study leading to a Master’s, Specialist or Doctoral Degree.

Applications received at least six (6) weeks prior to the beginning of a term will be given priority; consult with your intended program for specific deadlines.

A new application must be received when a student is beginning a graduate program, transferring graduate programs, changing from non-degree to degree-seeking status, or adding a dual or certificate program to an existing degree program.

Master’s Funding Coverage,

All students interested in full funding may apply for a Graduate Assistantship (GTA) position. Students awarded with a GTA position receive an annual 10-month stipend, tuition for all approved courses, and health benefits. Typically, GTA students tutor in the University Writing Center for their first year and teach First Year Composition during their second year.

To apply for a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) position, submit the following items along with your application materials:
