Fully Funded Master’s in History at Auburn University

About Master’s Program,

Our graduate students have a strong record of job placement both inside and outside of academia. The page below provides a detailed explanation of graduation requirements. For a more general overview on what each of these programs looks like we encourage you to check out our Introduction to Graduate School page.

Master’s Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,

Departments make admissions decisions based on the compatibility of the applicant’s goals with departmental resources, the availability of spaces for new students, and a holistic evaluation of the applicant’s potential for success in the program. Other considerations might typically include standardized test scores, grades and/or GPAs, letters of recommendation, writing samples, research or applied experience, and interviews.

The applicant must hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or provide proof of equivalent training from a recognized academic institution outside the United States. Equivalency is determined by international evaluators in the Graduate School.

The applicant must be in good standing at the institution last attended.

The applicant must submit standardized examination scores (GRE, GMAT, TOEFL, and/or IELTS) if required for application to the degree program. Applicants with an earned doctorate (Professional, EdD, PhD) from an accredited institution whose instruction is in English may be exempted from this requirement.

The successful applicant normally will meet one of the following: a) a GPA of at least 2.75 on all undergraduate course work at an accredited United States institution in fulfillment of the requirements for a baccalaureate degree; b) a GPA of at least 3.0 on all graduate course work at an accredited United States institution in fulfillment of the requirements for a graduate degree; or c) an acceptable GRE or GMAT score as determined by the program to which the applicant applies.

Master’s Funding Coverage,

Nearly all admitted students are offered funded graduate assistantships, which carry a tuition waiver, health insurance and stipend to our graduate students. Master’s students are usually admitted with assistantships for two academic years. Doctoral students are usually admitted with five years of funding.

Graduate assistantships in the Department of History provide a tuition waiver, health insurance and a competitive nine-month stipend. Graduate assistants typically work to support faculty teaching world history surveys as graduate teaching assistants (GTA) but may also help teach other classes. Other students work as graduate research assistants (GRA) providing assistance to faculty members. The work experience gained as a GTA or GRA provides students with valuable experience, training and mentorship in teaching and research.

Graduate assistants must be full-time students enrolled in nine hours of coursework per semester or enrolled in dissertation/thesis research. Assistantships require a commitment of approximately 13 hours of work per week. Additional details relating to the duties of graduate assistants can be found in the Graduate Program Handbook.
