Fully Funded Master’s in History at Ohio University

About Master’s Program,

The Ohio University Graduate College works together with each graduate program to process and review your application. You submit all application materials to the Graduate College, where your materials are gathered for the academic program.

Once you have identified the graduate program to help you meet your personal and professional goals, review the application requirements and deadlines in the Graduate Catalog and on the academic program website.

Each program handles application reviews differently, but generally, there is a committee of faculty who review applications. Admission recommendations are sent to the Graduate College which then confirms minimum admission requirements have been met and finalizes the admission offer. Your admission is not final until you receive a formal admission letter via email from the Graduate College.

Master’s Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,

Admission to graduate study is highly competitive, and there are almost always more applicants than available spaces. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to a program.

On-Campus Programs: Persons interested in applying to Athens campus programs should reach out to the academic program(opens in a new window) directly before applying.

Online Programs: Generally, students that reside outside of the United States are not eligible to enroll in an online program. Ohio University also is unable to provide immigration support to international students in online programs. If you would like to discuss your specific situation in order to determine eligibility for admission to an online program, reach out to an OHIO Online enrollment advisor(opens in a new window) before applying.

Master’s Funding Coverage,

The History Department awards graduate teaching assistantships that carry stipends and tuition waivers. The Contemporary History Institute(opens in a new window) has fellowships that it awards to selected graduate students admitted to its program.

University policy sets limits on the duration of funding for graduate students. According to that policy, a graduate student with a graduate degree from another institution (e.g. a Ph.D. student who earned an M.A. elsewhere) can receive a maximum of 10 semesters of tuition support, excluding summers. A graduate student without a graduate degree from another institution (e.g. either an M.A. student or a Ph.D. student with an M.A. from Ohio) can receive a maximum of 12 semesters of graduate tuition scholarship.

The History Department’s general policy has been to provide an M.A. student with a maximum of four semesters of support and a Ph.D. student with eight semesters of support. Someone who earns both degrees in our department can receive 12 semesters of support. There may be occasions, however, when exceptions are in both the department’s interest and the student’s. Should the department have funds available and a need for an additional teaching assistant, and should the student benefit from additional support, the department might offer financial support to someone who was previously ineligible. All decisions will be on a case-by-case basis and are, of course, subject to budgetary constraints that can vary considerably from year to year.
