About Master’s Program,
The Department of History offers graduate programs leading to the Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Concentrations are available in the geographic areas of Asia, Europe, and the United States with specializations within each field.
Recent PhDs have secured full-time positions at such institutions as the University of Texas-Arlington, the U.S. Air Force Air Command and Staff College, Tarleton State University, the University of the Incarnate Word, University of Nebraska-Kearney, the University of Houston-Downtown, Southwestern Oklahoma State University, San Angelo State University, Prairie View A&M University, University of South Carolina-Lancaster, South Plains College, Midland College, Community College of Southern Nevada, University of Texas-Permian Basin, McMurray University, Stephen F. Austin State University, Wayland Baptist University, and Panhandle State University.
Recent MA graduates have obtained admission to PhD programs at the University of Oklahoma, University of Texas, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, University of Chicago, the Ohio State University, Boston College, Washington University in St. Louis, University of Florida, University of Illinois, New York University, Boston University, University of Kentucky, Temple University, University of Tennessee, University of London, Clark University, Tulane University, University of California at Berkeley, University of Connecticut, University of Rochester, William and Mary University, University of North Carolina Greensboro, Fordham University, and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
Master’s Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
A student qualifying for admission to the Graduate School may gain admission to the department’s Master’s program by meeting the following standards:
- Possession of a bachelor’s degree in history or at least 24 hours of undergraduate history or sufficient courses in related disciplines to indicate a background in the general area of humanistic studies.
- An overall grade-point average on undergraduate work of 3.00 or higher.
- At least 18 hours of undergraduate history with grades of B or above.
Master’s Funding Coverage,
The Department of History awards Teaching Assistantships annually. The stipends currently range from $14,000 to $20,000, and include in-state tuition status as well as the waiver of some fees. Teaching Assistant duties include grading, supervising discussion sections for freshman survey courses, and teaching independent sections of U.S. History. The selection process is competitive and decisions for the next academic year are made in the latter part of the spring semester of each year. Depending on departmental staffing needs and individual performance both as a student and as a teacher, Teaching Assistantships can be renewed for up to one year for MA students and three years for PhD students.

New applicants to the program should mark the appropriate box on the application for the Department of History. Those applying after the annual selection will be considered for any vacancies that arise during the academic year.

- Submit your current CV through the Graduate School’s application portal. It can be uploaded as “additional materials” or the like.
- Submit a Statement of Purposeoutlining your reasons for wanting to study history at the graduate level, your goals in the field, and your particular strengths and aptitudes for graduate study in history. This document will be uploaded through the Graduate School’s application portal.
- Submit a 10 to 20 page Writing Samplesuch as a thesis chapter, research paper, or some other written work indicative of your abilities as a historical writer and researcher. This document will be uploaded through the Graduate School’s application portal.
- Have three referees (preferably those familiar with your academic record) submit letters of recommendation. You will provide names and contact information to the Graduate School through the application portal, and your recommenders will receive an official email from the Graduate School with a link to upload their letter.
