About Master’s Program,

The MS degree is designed for students who plan to use mathematical theory and techniques in fields outside mathematics or as a preparation for applying to a Ph.D. program.

Students pursuing an MS degree take 36 hours of approved course work, including at least 15 hours from the year-long graduate sequences in algebra, analysis, and topology. Students are required to make a formal presentation of a Master’s project. More information and the precise degree requirements for an MS may be found in the UNT Graduate Catalog.

Master’s Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,

Graduate applicants to UNT are evaluated holistically, based on specific departmental and program requirements. In the past, successful candidates usually have met certain GPA minimum requirements:

  • 00 GPA in the undergraduate degree for admission to the master’s program

Applicants holding a bachelor’s degree with Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board recognized accreditation, its equivalent credential from a foreign institution, or a three-year bachelor’s degree* that meets UNT’s established criteria, are eligible to apply for admission to UNT graduate study.

A well-qualified applicant will have the equivalent of an undergraduate degree with a major in mathematics from UNT. The precise requirements for a major in mathematics can be found in the Undergraduate Catalog. An applicant should have earned strong grades in several proof-based upper-division mathematics courses (e.g. abstract algebra, real analysis, and topology).

Master’s Funding Coverage,

Tuition is fully covered for all supported graduate students. Supported students are paid a stipend of $19,062 per year. PhD students who have completed all degree requirements except for the dissertation are paid a stipend of $21,294 per year.
