About PhD Program,
Develop your teaching skills, delve into research or further your music education in preparation for doctoral studies with a Master of Music in Music Education degree in Temple’s Boyer College of Music of Dance. The comprehensive graduate program—offered both online and in-person—is structured to help students gain a deeper understanding of advanced educational and music learning theories, key music education principles and effective practices, and research methodologies.
Fully accredited by National Association of Schools of Music, National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and the Pennsylvania Department of Education, this 30-credit degree provides opportunities for studies in music education practice and music education research.
Through a rigorous course of study, students are prepared to seek permanent teaching certification in Pennsylvania, advance existing teaching careers, or apply to music education doctoral programs. Coursework hones knowledge of
PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
Applicants must submit a digital video demonstrating teaching skills and musicianship. The video should be no longer than 15 minutes in duration. Students should include a brief written narrative explaining the contents of the video. A written examination to demonstrate writing skills and general knowledge about music education is also required. This examination will be scheduled by the director of graduate programs in Music Education and the applicant during the interview.
All Temple University graduate programs require a completed application form, a statement of goals, and one certified copy of official transcripts from every college and university attended, including Temple University. A minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is ordinarily required for admissions consideration. However, requirements for some programs may vary.
Please note that applications typically are not reviewed until they are complete, which requires receipt of all required credentials and payment of the application fee. Applications may be submitted to more than one program, but no student may pursue two degrees simultaneously, except for those admitted to university-approved dual degree programs.

PhD Funding Coverage,
Graduate students in the Boyer College of Music and Dance may apply for graduate assistantships, fellowships, performance grants and tuition scholarships. Unless otherwise noted, awards are open to both master’s and doctoral students. All awards are highly competitive and based on a record of academic and artistic excellence.

Awards are open to full-time graduate students only. Based largely upon the quality of the student’s undergraduate record and experience, these awards include full or partial tuition remission, a cash stipend per year, and health insurance. Recipients teach or render comparable service to the school.
