About Master’s Program,
Montclair State University’s MA in Psychological Sciences program seeks to prepare students for doctoral-level study in Psychology. Students that enter this program develop their abilities in research methods and data analysis while also gaining a broad base of knowledge in psychological sub-disciplines.
The MA program in Psychological Sciences is excellent preparation for doctoral-level studies in experimental or applied psychological disciplines. Many of the graduates from the MA in Psychological Sciences program further their studies in doctoral programs at Columbia University, Rutgers University, the CUNY system, Lehigh University, and Yeshiva University, to name a few.
This program also prepares students for a variety of research-focused careers. Graduates of this program will be qualified for work as researchers in a variety of settings, including academic laboratories, social service agencies, government agencies, educational evaluation programs, and corporate research and development or marketing departments. Former students have secured positions as research assistants at The Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, The Passaic County Mental Health Center, and The Alpine School, as examples.
Master’s Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
In order to graduate, students in the MA in Psychology program must complete a total of 35 credits and conduct an empirical thesis project under the supervision of one of our faculty members.
The Office of Graduate Admissions requires the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree in order to be eligible to apply for a graduate program. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree in psychology or a minimum of 12 undergraduate credits in psychology, including a course in statistics and a laboratory experimental course. Please note: an introductory course in psychology does not count toward the minimum credit requirement, though it might be needed as a pre-requisite to other psychology courses. The undergraduate requirements can be taken here at Montclair State University or another university. Please be sure to check with the Graduate Programs Coordinator to be certain the courses taken elsewhere fulfill the undergraduate credit requirements.
