About Master’s Program,

The Master of Arts program in Spanish in the Modern Languages Department offers students the opportunity to learn with an interdisciplinary approach. Students will be able to analyze literature, become informed observers of language usage, and acquire advanced language and cultural skills.

This is a full-time program. Normative time to completion is four semesters (two academic years).

Analyze literary and other cultural products and practices through appropriate theoretical and historical lenses.

Demonstrate understanding of phenomena in different subfields of Hispanic linguistics.

Implement teaching strategies in line with current language acquisition theories.

Master’s Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,

Admission to graduate study is highly competitive, and there are almost always more applicants than available spaces. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to a program.

On-Campus Programs: Persons interested in applying to Athens campus programs should reach out to the academic program(opens in a new window) directly before applying.

Online Programs: Generally, students that reside outside of the United States are not eligible to enroll in an online program. Ohio University also is unable to provide immigration support to international students in online programs. If you would like to discuss your specific situation in order to determine eligibility for admission to an online program, reach out to an OHIO Online enrollment advisor(opens in a new window) before applying.

Master’s Funding Coverage,

Prospective students considered for admission to the graduate program in the Department of Modern Languages are also considered for financial support then they apply by the deadline for priority consideration, Jan. 15.

Selected students might be granted a teaching assistantship, which is a form of funding. Students who are appointed as Teaching Assistants will receive a monthly stipend for services provided to the department, plus a full scholarship (tuition waiver) for the academic year. The stipend is for the academic year, not the calendar year (approximately eight months).

All students are responsible for paying a general fee each term and student health insurance (If the student is already covered by a health insurance policy, proof must be provided). The university also charges a Technology fee each term.

All private expenses such as: travel, rent, personal purchases, meals, etc. are not covered by the university.

Application Requirement,

Online application form along with a nonrefundable application fee submitted to the Graduate College via the following link: https://grad.ohio.edu/apply/(opens in a new window).

Official transcripts and diplomas from post-secondary schools:

Students can upload a copy of their transcript, marksheets, diploma and/or degree certificates with their online application, but they also must submit official copies by mail. An official transcript is one that arrives in an envelope that has been sealed by the issuing institution.

If these documents are not in English, students will need a certified translation into English.

English Proficiency: The Modern Languages Department has English proficiency requirements that are higher than the minimum university requirements. Please review information about Ohio University’s English Language Proficiency requirements(opens in a new window). The minimum for the M.A. in Spanish is:

TOEFL required scores: a minimum of 80 on the Internet based exam with all section scores at least a 17 and a speaking score of 24 to be considered for an assistantship.

IELTS required scores: a composite score of 6.0 with a speaking score of 7.0 and at least a 6.0 on all bands.

Three letters of recommendation (preferably from professors who can comment on students’ academic performance).  A letter from an employer is also very valuable.

A written statement of purpose in either English or Spanish. We recommend that candidates search information regarding “how to write a statement of purpose.”

An essay response in the language not chosen above to: Describe an episode in your life where you needed to show leadership qualities, and explain how you grew from the experience.

After initial review of applications, the graduate committee will schedule an interview (on Microsoft Teams or Zoom) with the strongest candidates.
