About Master’s Program,

Pending policy review by the University of Texas Board of Regents, the GRE is no longer a requirement for applicants to the Modern Languages with a concentration in French or Spanish graduate program. The Modern Languages graduate program will not consider GRE scores when making admissions decisions. If you have taken the GRE, please refrain from submitting your scores as they will not be considered as a component of your application.

A 36-hour degree, designed to enhance students’ competence in the French language and knowledge of the literature and culture of the French-speaking world. Specific objectives are to prepare students for a career in teaching, or in any area in private or public life in which knowledge of a modern language is essential, and to help them develop the techniques of independent research necessary for work beyond the master’s level. Students will take a minimum 9 hours in the core MODL courses, along with 27 hours in French courses or alternatively, a maximum of 12 hours in the core MODL courses and 24 hours in French courses.

Students will take a maximum of 6 hours in the core MODL courses, along with Spanish courses in linguistics, literature, culture, and translation studies.

Master’s Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,    

  • Full-time undergraduate studentsshould have completed minimum of 12 semester credit hours of language courses in MODL at UTA with a minimum overall college GPA of 3.0.
  • Full-time graduate studentsshould have completed a minimum of 12 graduate semester hours in a language at UTA with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0.  

Master’s Funding Coverage,

The Department of Modern Languages supports student success with merit-based scholarships for our undergraduate and graduate majors. We award over $20,000 in scholarships each academic year. Applications are accepted every Fall and Spring semesters.

Awards are intended for undergraduate and graduate students majoring in a Modern Language at the University of Texas at Arlington.

  • $500-750 for undergraduate recipients of the scholarship
  • $500-1000 for graduate recipients of the scholarship

Application Requirement,  

B.A. degree in the language to be studied, or equivalent of 18 hours of upper-level coursework in language to be studied.

A student who does not meet this requirement may obtain 18 hours by taking courses at the 3000 and 4000 level in French or Spanish at UTA.

A student may attempt to test out of nine hours of grammar, composition, and conversation. If a student tests out of grammar, composition, and conversation, s/he must take nine hours of 4000-level coursework, in order to demonstrate the ability to do advanced studies.

A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.00, as calculated by the Graduate School (usually, last 60 hours).

GRE score. Under specific circumstances, the GRE may be waived for applicants who received their B.A. from UTA.

TOEFL score, for international students whose native language is not English. Applicants are expected to score 550 on the paper-based test or 213 on the computer-based test, in order to qualify for unconditional admission.

Submission of all documents required for application to the Graduate School (application, fee, official transcripts, and GRE scores).
