Fully Funded MEd in Higher Education at University of Houston

About Master’s Program,

The M.Ed. in Higher Education program prepares those who aspire to leadership positions in student affairs and other key administrative areas within a college or university. Our graduates are employed in a variety of different types of postsecondary institutions, including: community and technical colleges, research universities, liberal arts colleges, and minority-serving colleges and universities.

Numerous studies have documented the impending ‘leadership gap’ in higher education, noting the insufficient number of qualified candidates prepared to assume the leadership roles that will soon be vacated by retirements. Our program is addressing this gap by equipping students with the knowledge and skills required to become the next generation of leaders in the field of higher education.

Master’s Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,

The College of Education requires a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.6 for undergraduate coursework or over the last 60 credit hours of coursework. Please refer to the program for specific GPA requirements.

The College requires a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 for graduate coursework. Please refer to the program for specific GPA requirements.

All applicants must abide by the minimum qualifications for admissions to a master’s or doctoral program. All graduate applicants (regardless of citizenship status) must demonstrate proficiency in English to obtain admission to the University.

Master’s Funding Coverage,

In partnership with the UH Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Services, we are proud to offer a wide range of Graduate Assistantship opportunities for our master’s students. Graduate Assistantships allow students to gain practical work experience in higher education while they pursue their master’s degree.

While the details of each assistantship appointment vary, these positions typically provide a monthly stipend. Students on Graduate Assistantship must pursue their M.Ed. on a full-time basis and are not permitted to hold employment outside of the assistantship.

Procurement of a Graduate Assistantship occurs through an interview process. The next Graduate Assistantship Interview Days will take place February 20-21, 2025 at the University of Houston campus. On interview day, newly admitted M.Ed. students have the opportunity to meet the Higher Education faculty and current master’s students, tour campus, and interview for the open assistantships in which they are interested.

The pool of available Graduate Assistantships varies from year-to-year as new positions become available and current assistantship students graduate. But prospective students can review past assistantships offered by reviewing the 2024-2025 list of UH Graduate Assistantship Opportunities. The finalized listing of graduate assistantship opportunities are shared with admitted students in early 2025.

Students may be considered for a Graduate Assistantship only after having been admitted into the M.Ed. in Higher Education program. Please visit the Graduate Admissions page for program admission deadlines and requirements.
