About Master’s Program,
Located within a distinguished English Department, NWP provides our students with three years of full funding, as well as hands-on teaching and editing experience. Because our program is closely affiliated with the Michener Center for Writers, students from these programs take many of the same courses from our accomplished resident faculty and esteemed visiting writers.
The New Writers Project offers students a close-knit program within a major university located in one of most creative and vibrant literary cities in the country. Our close association with the Michener Center for Writers means students in both programs benefit equally from sharing many of the same instructors and courses. But because NWP students also teach during five of their six semesters on campus, they graduate with practical experience they can later use if they choose to pursue teaching positions.
Master’s Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
To apply, you must meet the minimum requirements established by the Graduate School of the University of Texas at Austin. For U.S. citizens, these include a bachelor’s degree from an accredited United States institution or proof of equivalent training at an institution outside the United States and a grade point average of at least 3.0 in all upper-division (and, if relevant, all graduate) course work. Additional information regarding eligibility requirements can be found on the Graduate School website.
Master’s Funding Coverage,
All students in the New Writers Project receive three years of full funding through a combination of teaching assistantships (TA), assistant instructorships (AI), and fellowship support. The complete funding package includes full tuition remission and a salary or fellowship stipend. In addition to providing funding, these appointments offer invaluable opportunities for our students to gain creative and professional development.
The nine-month College of Liberal Arts TA stipend for the 2024-2025 academic year is $20,759. The nine-month College of Liberal Arts AI stipend for the 2024-2025 academic year is $22,994.
In recent years, we have been able to award all NWP students a $4,000 English Department Research Grant, paid as a $2,000 installment in the summer following year one in the program and a $2,000 installment in the summer following year two.
