About Master’s Program,
The Michener Center for Writers is the only Creative Writing M.F.A. program in the world that provides full and equal funding to every writer—yet it is our extraordinary faculty and sense of community that most distinguishes us. Our program is a three-year, fully-funded residency M.F.A. with a unique multi-disciplinary focus. Writers apply and are admitted in a primary genre—fiction, poetry, playwriting or screenwriting—and study in both their primary and a secondary genre(s). There are no teaching duties, a luxury that allows our Fellows to commit themselves fully to their writing. And because only twelve writers are admitted each year, our faculty can devote ample time and energy to every writer. With unparalleled support and the deeply held belief that literary art matters now more than ever, the Michener Center offers writers 3 years of unencumbered space to make the work that only they can make.
Master’s Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
A grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or a comparable GPA in upper-division work—junior- and senior-level courses—and in any graduate work already completed is also required. If your GPA does not meet the minimum requirement—or if you feel that your GPA is not a valid indicator of your ability—you may submit an application, then use the Document Upload System to add a letter explaining your concerns.
Check with the program to which you are applying to see which test you should take. International applicants must take either the TOEFL or the Academic Examination of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
Your records must reflect adequate subject preparation for your proposed graduate major. Check with the program to which you are applying if you have questions about pre-requisite coursework.
Master’s Funding Coverage,
All admitted students receive a fellowship of $30,000 per academic year and a summer stipend of $4000 for a $34,000 total annual award. In addition to the annual fellowship, the Michener Center also provides each Fellow with a stipend for health insurance that covers the cost of the individual student health insurance plan (approximately $4,000 annually), directly pays required tuition (approximately $9000 annual value), and provides the opportunity for a conference attendance grant of up to $1000 per academic year. Support is renewed each year with satisfactory progress towards the degree.
