About Master’s Program,
As designers, we create experiences that shape our world. Our BFA and MFA programs aim for you to develop your critical and creative abilities in a constructive and collaborative environment. Our goal? For you to positively contribute to a dynamically changing world.
We are makers, researchers, and thinkers with a focus on creating better futures for all. For over 50 years, we have prepared students for a range of practices and careers in graphic design, design & visual communications, interaction design, and beyond. In addition to critical design competencies, we value and emphasize community and shared learning experiences to prepare students for the collaborative work that is fundamental to design practice. Situated within a top-tier research university, both undergraduate and graduate programs emphasize the integration of research, process, and making to inform a range of responses to challenges we see in the world. Our goal is to create design interventions and engagements that are responsible, sustainable, and innovative. As such, our programs focus on addressing the issues and challenges that matter to people. Check out the alumn interviews on our Vimeo Page.
Master’s Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution. Applicants often major in communication design or a closely related area (ex: architecture, industrial or interior design), although we recognize there are many ways to learn design and welcome applicants with degrees in other majors.
All applicants must demonstrate a level of achievement acceptable for master’s level study in this discipline. Materials submitted should demonstrate an understanding of an iterative design process, one’s ability to think critically and conceptually in a design context (i.e., design & visual communication thinking, skills, and abilities), and the ability to work collaboratively. Interested applicants are encouraged to contact the director of graduate studies at design@arts.ufl.edu with any questions and/or to arrange a campus visit prior to applying.
Master’s Funding Coverage,
Assistantships are salaried positions that require a time commitment averaging 20 hours per week performing duties related to teaching, technical/studio/lab assistance, gallery assistance, office administrative assistance, and research. Assistantships constitute the majority of the school’s financial aid funds and are awarded during admission review.
Graduate assistants are evaluated each year and re-appointment is based on the faculty evaluation of performance and the student’s satisfactory progress in the degree program. Most assistantships are extended for the standard duration of the student’s program, as offered in the admission award. In addition to receiving a stipend, students receive:
- Tuition waiver cover the minimum credits required for full-time enrollment
(9 credits in the fall and spring semesters; 3 credits for summer A or B, or 6 credits for summer C) - GatorGradCare student health insurance. Student monthly premium is currently $12. All details are updated at the linked location.
Tuition waivers do not cover university fees associated with registration (approximately $850-950 per semester), nor do they cover course fees, which may range from $45-$75 per graduate course. The university fees are deferred until mid-semester, which allows graduate assistants time to budget for the expense. All fees must be paid by the fee payment deferment deadline to avoid a $100 late fee payment charge and cancellation of registration.
