About PhD Program,

The Accounting & Management Information Systems Ph.D. program in the Fisher College of Business at Ohio State is one of the top accounting Ph.D. programs in the country. The program’s goal is to help prepare you for a successful and productive career as a faculty member at a leading research-oriented university. As a Ph.D. student in our program, our outstanding faculty will give you the individual attention and high level of training that makes our approach to graduate study one of the best in the nation. We have a diverse set of faculty who are leading researchers in tax accounting, analytical accounting, empirical capital markets research, experimental/behavioral accounting, auditing, and information systems.

Our program consists of two tracks: Accounting and MIS. It is internationally recognized, and ranks among the top 25 in terms of Ph.D. alumni publications and achievements. Ph.D. alumni are on the faculty at such universities as Carnegie Mellon, Cornell, Texas at Austin, Illinois, Michigan State, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Southern California, and Washington. Several recent Ohio State PhD students have been awarded the Deloitte Foundation Doctoral Fellowship.

The Accounting & MIS Ph.D. program takes four to five years to complete. The time to completion depends on the rigor of the student’s prior preparation and aptitude in accounting, economics and mathematics. The program is full-time and all students are expected to be in residence throughout the entire program, including graduation, to ensure they complete the degree in a timely manner.

PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,

The purpose of the Ph.D. Program in Accounting & Management Information Systems is to improve the academic disciplines of accounting and management information systems by establishing an environment that facilitates our students’ development as scholars. All students are full-time and in residence. The program normally takes four to five years, depending in part on the student’s economics, mathematics, and statistics background.

PhD Funding Coverage,

All admitted students into any of the Fisher PhD programs are fully funded, including a stipend and tuition costs. Funding is available for four to six years, at the discretion of each academic department.

Applicants to any of Fisher’s PhD programs do not need to do anything to be considered for funding – if an applicant is admitted, s/he is funded. The funding may come in many different forms, such as fellowships, research assistantships, teaching assistantships, supplemental grants or a variety of other methods.

Funding is commonly made through teaching assistantships, Graduate Teaching Associates or research assistantships, Graduate Research Associates. These positions may involve teaching, assisting faculty in research, and/or administrative activities.

Application Requirement,

We select our students on the basis of qualities that are most favorable for achieving a high-level career as a researcher and teacher. The Ph.D. program is designed for full-time students, with admitted students beginning the program in the autumn semester. To enter the program you must be accepted by the graduate Accounting & MIS faculty, in addition to the university and the Graduate School. Applications are processed by the Fisher College of Business Graduate Programs Office.

Applicants may submit either a GMAT or GRE score, but the accounting and MIS graduate faculty strongly prefer that applicants take the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). For more information on the GMAT (including registration, etc.), go to mba.com. We cannot accept an applicant without a minimum test score of 600, even though other application materials indicate academic success.

  • To report your GMAT score to the AMIS PhD program, use institution code ZLJ-9D-02.
  • To report your GRE score to the AMIS PhD program, use institution code 1592.

If your native language is not English, the university requires you to provide proof of English proficiency. This requirement is waived for applicants with a bachelor’s degree or higher from the United States or one of the other exempt countries. All of this information can be found on the Additional Requirements to Apply page on the Graduate and Professional Admissions website.

The admissions process is competitive, with 1-3 students joining the program each year.  While admission decisions are based on candidates’ overall applications, the most important items in your application package are your scholarship record as indicated by your standardized test scores (admitted applicants almost always have a total GMAT score above 700), your most recent coursework at the undergraduate or graduate level, and the quality of your recommendations. We encourage outstanding students with a bachelor’s degree to enter the Ph.D. program directly. Such students may earn a master’s degree while in the Ph.D. program.

Recent course work in economic theory, statistics, mathematics, and (possibly) organization theory and behavioral science, in addition to accounting and computer science, is especially helpful. Able students without such course work, as well as those without a strong background in accounting or MIS, may be admitted if they have a strong background in quantitative disciplines.
