About PhD Program,
The Agricultural and Environmental Chemistry graduate group is the oldest interdepartmental graduate group at UC Davis and is renowned for its multidisciplinary approach to research in applied chemistry. In addition to the many research opportunities available, students in the group can also take advantage of an enormous breadth of classes in basic and applied chemistry and in related areas.
The Group consists of over 50 Ph.D. and M.S. students and more than 55 faculty. Graduate Students in the program design an academic program that suits their needs and interests. Coursework options are divided into four areas of specialization: environmental & analytical chemistry, biological & toxicological chemistry, food & wine chemistry, and fiber & polymer chemistry.
PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA
- A minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) from the institution where you have earned or will earn your bachelor’s degree.
- By the time they enroll, successful applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent that is comparable to a degree from the University of California both in distribution of academic subject matter and in scholarship achievement. Regional accreditation for U.S. institutions and authorization by a national higher education authority for international institutions (at the time the degree was earned) are used as the eligibility standard.
- Applicants must submit TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo scores unless they have earned or will be earning a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree from either a regionally accredited or foreign college/university which provides instruction solely in English. See the English Language Requirementsection for details.
- A non-refundable application fee ($135 for domestic applicants, $155 for international applicants, or possible fee waiver for participants in approved Graduate Preparatory Programs).
Your graduate program may have specific admissions requirements that differ from the requirements above. View your program-specific admissions requirements on your Graduate Program Page or reach out to your graduate program coordinator listed on the Graduate Program Page to learn more about your program’s admissions requirements.
- If you are an international applicant, consult the information for international studentsfor special requirements pertaining to your admission.
- In addition to the above noted requirements, graduate programs may require entrance exams, such as the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), other relevant ability or achievement tests, letters of recommendation, a GPA and/or English language testing score higher than the university minimum, and/or other program-specific material as the program finds appropriate.
- Please note that satisfying these minimum standards does not guarantee admission since the number of qualified applicants far exceeds the number of spaces available. As a consequence, many well-qualified applicants cannot be accommodated.
PhD Funding Coverage,
The most common form of graduate support, teaching and research assistantships, include a salary and tuition & fee remission (including student health insurance). Recipients are assigned to a faculty adviser who supervises the experience. Graduate assistants support undergraduate instruction or undertake research projects. Appointments are available only to graduate students who are registered for courses and enrolled in degree programs. Students whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate a sufficient level of English language proficiency in order to receive a teaching assistantship.
Fellowships
Fellowships are highly prestigious financial support packages that typically include a stipend and cover tuition & fees (including student health insurance). They derive from University or outside awards. Unlike academic employment, they do not have a required instruction or research responsibilities. Recipients must be enrolled in a degree program and be registered full-time. Find out more information about Graduate Studies’ fellowship competitions for incoming and continuing graduate students.
Application Requirement,
Every graduate program at UC Davis requires the following components as part of their application:
- A completed UC Davis online application
- An application fee
- $135 for U.S. applicants
- $155 for international applicants
- Letters of recommendation (please check your graduate program requirements!)
- Admissions Essays:
- Personal history and diversity statement
- Statement of purpose
- Academic transcripts from all prior institutions (see note below)
It is possible your graduate program could require additional application materials, such as portfolio samples, writing samples, CV upload, or have supplemental questions on the application. Please view your program’s specific admissions requirements page for a complete list of requirements and instructions on how they should be submitted. Do not submit any application materials that are not required by the program. Be sure to read all instructions carefully – most application materials must be submitted as a part of the online application process.
Requesting and receiving letters of recommendation can be a lengthy process. We recommend you begin this process early in your application process. UC Davis only accepts electronic letters of recommendations via the admissions applicant portal.
Transcripts are required from all college-level institutions. You may use unofficial transcripts uploaded as .pdfs for your UC Davis application. Official transcripts are only required if you are an admitted student. You must list every college-level institution you have attended in the online application, including all community colleges, study abroad coursework, etc. If your college or institution does not use the 4.0 scale, do not attempt to convert your GPA. On the application, enter your GPA just as it is on your transcript.
