Fully Funded PhD in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at University of Pennsylvania

About PhD Program,

The Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering program was founded in 1893 making it one of only 5 of America’s oldest continuously operating degree-granting programs in chemical engineering.

The Ph.D. program in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering is primarily a research-oriented degree for students showing exceptional promise for original contributions to the theory and practice of chemical and biomolecular engineering.

The degree is a virtual requirement for those planning to teach chemical and biomolecular engineering, as well as for those planning for a career in research or industry. At CBE, Students are given the opportunity to work in a collaborative culture that includes multiple generations of leaders in academia, government, and industry. Doctoral candidates are expected to show superior capability for independent work and study.

A detailed explanation of degree requirements and policies can be found here.

PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,

The MSE program offers students and scholars the opportunity for advanced study in the scientific foundations of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. If you want to pursue an advanced Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering degree, the MSE program will prepare you for careers in industry, research and development, government, and, academia.  Some students also apply to medical school. The program requires 10 course units, and students may choose a thesis or non-thesis path to the degree.

Grades given in graduate engineering courses are A, B, C, D, F, and I. The I (Incomplete) is a temporary grade which is changed to a letter grade when the course requirements have been completed. A grade average of at least B must be kept to remain in good standing. Students with an undergraduate degree in a field other than chemical and biomolecular engineering receiving a grade of C or below in any required undergraduate course will be asked to withdraw. Research is graded S or U.

PhD Funding Coverage,

Students accepted as Ph.D. students in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering are customarily “fully funded,” which means that funding will be provided that includes tuition, health insurance, and a stipend, so long as the student is making satisfactory progress.

Funding may come from several sources: the School of Engineering and Applied Science, the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department, research grants of the faculty, institutional training grants, industrial sources, as well as funding from direct federal and foundation fellowships to the student. Details regarding each funding offer are specified in a letter from the department at the time that an individual is offered admission.

We encourage all students to apply for fellowships that pertain to them during their graduate studies since this will provide additional flexibility throughout their time at Penn.
