About PhD Program,
The aim of the graduate program in chemistry is to provide an environment for individuals to develop the skills to become leaders in scientific research and education, capable of making original contributions to the advancement of chemistry and related disciplines.
Programs leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees are offered in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, materials chemistry, organic chemistry and physical chemistry. Research in the department is conducted in such interdisciplinary areas as bioanalytical, bioorganic, bioinorganic chemistry, chemical biology, physical organic chemistry, organometallic chemistry, chemical physics, and quantum science.
PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
Master’s degree: A Master’s Degree is not required for admission, and several students begin our program directly after completing a bachelor’s degree (B.S. or B.A.). However, it is typically required that you complete the program in which you are enrolled when you apply. The graduate school will require a final and official transcript showing the degree earned, preferably before you arrive on campus or register for courses.
Grade Point Average: For admission consideration, your grade point average from the most recent degree (undergraduate, graduate, or professional) must be at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent from a different grading system; we are aware that many international universities use grading scales that may not be directly proportional to a US 4.0-scale, and will take that into consideration in our review of applications).
PhD Funding Coverage,
Beyond providing an excellent graduate education, we strive to ensure that our students thrive personally. Students in our Ph.D program with no external fellowship funding are guaranteed financial support through graduate assistantships for at least five years, so long as satisfactory progress is made toward their degree, while those with fellowships are provided appointments for the timeframe not covered by outside funding.
First-year Ph.D students admitted to our Ph.D. program can expect to receive an offer of financial support through a teaching assistantship with a generous monetary stipend, a full tuition waiver, and a waiver of most fees–a combined support package valued at nearly $70,000 per year. Exceptionally qualified candidates may receive additional financial awards with their offer of admission.
In addition, Purdue covers 80% of the cost of a comprehensive health insurance plan for grads with graduate assistantships and fellowships. For additional information about the health, dental and vision insurance we offer our graduate staff, please visit the Office of the Vice Provost for Graduate Students and Post Doctoral Scholars’s benefits page.
Graduate students living in the Greater Lafayette area also benefit from the area’s highly reasonable cost of living, which is 10% below the national average. That low cost of living, in combination with our full funding package, can help graduate students focus on their academic pursuits rather than worry about finances.
