Fully Funded PhD in Chemistry at University of California-Los Angeles

About PhD Program,

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers two graduate PhD programs: the Biochemistry, Molecular and Structural Biology Graduate Program and the Chemistry Graduate Program. Students may apply to either program, but not both at the same time. Students can also choose to focus on one of the many interdisciplinary research areas. To find out more, please see below.

Students interested in pursuing a PhD program in Analytical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Materials and Nanoscience, or Physical Chemistry, should apply to the Chemistry Graduate Program. UCLA Chemistry has a long history of successful and innovative chemistry research. Our basic research impacts and has far reaching consequences in the fields of medicine, energy, energy storage, electronics, and computer industry.

PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,

Application Requirement,

The following materials should be uploaded directly into the application. Any updates should be sent directly to the program to which you are applying. Check Departmental Information for contact information.

  • Transcripts
  • Applications to most programs are reviewed based on unofficialcopies of your transcripts uploaded as part of your application.
  • Unofficial Transcripts:
  • As part of your application, you will be required to upload a copy of an unofficial transcript. An unofficial transcript will be issued by your university or college registrar’s office but may be accessed through a student portal. An unofficial transcript may also be a physical, official copy that you have opened and uploaded. Avoid uploading degree progress reports, grade audits, or similar printouts; these do not count as unofficial transcripts. Acceptable unofficial transcripts from U.S. institutions must:
  • Have the word “transcript” on the document
  • Have the name of your institution attended or are attending
  • Include the student’s name, program of study, and major of study
  • Include a term by term breakdown of each course taken with its corresponding units and grade*
  • Be clearly legible
  • In addition to the university’s unofficial transcript requirement, some departments may also require official transcripts at the time of application. Official transcripts are sent directly from your institution’s registrar’s office to the department to which you are applying (either via mail or electronically) or are sent by the applicant via mail but have never been opened by the applicant.
  • Please be sure to include the key or legend showing the grading scale of the institution with the transcript upload.
  • *This requirement is waived only for those applicants who attended institutions that do  not use a traditional grade or grade point system. For those institutions, there must be a note on the unofficial transcript that states that the institution does not assign grades or grade points.
  • Applicants who are officially notified of admission: Oneofficial copy of your transcripts should be sent directly from the registrars of the academic institutions you have attended (beyond secondary school or community college), or you may request official copies and send them yourself to the academic department or professional school. Please note that submitted records become the property of the University and cannot be returned.
  • If you are a university/college senior, do not wait for senior-year grades before submitting your application and transcript.
  • UCLA undergraduates, please note: You do notneed to submit official copies of UCLA transcripts.
  • Fellowship Application for Entering Graduate Students
  • Statement of Purpose
  • The statement of purpose is very important and is carefully considered in the selection process. Be concise and specific.
  • Letters of Recommendation
  • You will be asked to enter the names and emails of your recommenders in the application.
  • Please note that applicants are notpermitted to inspect letters of recommendation in their UCLA files. If you are admitted to UCLA and enroll, you may then have access to your letters of recommendation unless you previously waived the right of access on the form.
  • The Graduate Record Examination(GRE)
  • As an additional means of evaluating the qualifications of applicants, a number of departments and schools include the standardized Graduate Record Examination(GRE) among criteria for judgment.
  • See Departmental Informationfor the GRE requirements for your proposed major.
  • Applications for and information concerning the GREmay be obtained by visiting the GRE website or by calling 609-771-7670.
  • Be sure to list the GRE institution code for UCLA 4837. GRE department codes can be found on the GRE websiteor by contacting prospective departments. If ETS has not assigned a major code to your proposed area of study, instruct them to send your score to your specific department. Please note that the Graduate Division has no provision for forwarding scores.
