PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,   

Direct entry Ph.D. students holding an undergraduate degree in engineering or a related technical field from an accredited institution can apply directly for the program. Direct entry students can complete the requirements for the M.S. degree before beginning Ph.D. studies.

We offer flexibility in our curriculum to accommodate diverse research interests. There are no formal course requirements for your Ph.D. program, though most students choose to take relevant courses that align with their chosen focus area. These courses can help you prepare for your qualifying comprehensive exam and enhance your knowledge base in your research field.

PhD Funding Coverage,

Students should be able to focus on their studies without worrying about financial burdens. The College of Engineering provides advice and support to help students finance their education. We offer a number of financial aid resources for graduate students. Application Requirement,

  • Application fee – $75.00 (U.S.)*
  • Unofficial transcript (upload into the application system before submitting your application). Official copies of final transcripts will be requested upon enrollment
  • Essay responses (questions accessible within the application system and vary by program)
  • Copy of CV/Resume (upload via application)
  • If you have publications that you would like the admissions committee to review, please link to them in your online resume.
  • Three letters of recommendation (uploaded through the online application system)
  • Official Duolingo English Test, TOEFL, or IELTS scores for non-native speakers of English
  • All international and United States permanent resident applicants must take an English language proficiency exam. This is required as a component in determining academic success in the program and to support visa applications for admitted students studying on an F-1 visa. The scores must be received by the application deadline for the semester in which students are applying. An English language proficiency test is not required if the applicant holds a previous degree from an institution in the United States or if the applicant is a CMU student or alum. It is also not required for applicants with United Kingdom or Canadian citizenship.
