For all further information, please contact Gareth Williams (GDW5@columbia.edu), John Ma (jtm2179@columbia.edu), or any member of the faculty in Columbia Classics. As always, we welcome inquiries about graduate work and the department more generally.
The Department of Classics is currently offering to assist with the costs of required books for students in our classes, in case of need or hardship. All students in classes offered by the Columbia and Barnard Classics Departments are eligible, regardless of college, degree path, or level.
PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
To comply with guidelines governing the disbursement of federal financial aid, GSAS has updated its policy regarding satisfactory academic progress. Students must now maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 to be considered as making satisfactory academic progress and to remain in good academic standing with the Graduate School. This policy applies to all GSAS students regardless of their receipt of federal aid.
Students admitted to the doctoral program earn first an MA, then complete an MPhil in Classics, entailing study of both languages and their literatures. Students must also demonstrate reading knowledge of two modern modern languages. See the Classics website for more information. The doctoral program culminates with the defense and submission of the dissertation.
PhD Funding Coverage,
Teaching and research experience are important aspects of graduate training and professional development, and graduate fellowships thus include some teaching and both supervised and independent research. All Classics doctoral students receive a full funding package, which includes both the cost of tuition and a stipend.
Classics Ph.D. students are normally offered 5 years of fellowship support, tuition plus a stipend. Further opportunities exist for graduate students to augment their stipend by teaching intensive Latin and Greek courses over the (six-week) summer session. Students may also apply for internal and external fellowships paying comparable stipends.
Not only are Columbia students eligible for various external fellowships for funding their dissertation research, Columbia University offers its own fellowships. Scholarships like the Thompson Fellowship or the Columbia University Travel Fellowships provide an extra year of funding beyond the fifth year, and are designed to give students the chance to work on their dissertations overseas, most commonly in places like Rome or Athens, though they can be used anywhere.
