About PhD Program,
The Field of Communication at Cornell University offers a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree. The PhD degree is a research degree. The doctoral program in the Field of Communication at Cornell is designed to be a small, high-quality program that will encourage students’ interests in proposing, testing, and refining communication theory using empirical, social science research methods. Doctoral students will become active, independent researchers. Program graduates will compete successfully for teaching and research positions at colleges and universities, work at consulting firms, or conduct research and contribute to policy in government and private organizations.
This digital manual is intended to help PhD students in the Field of Communication. The information has been compiled by the Field’s Graduate Program Committee (GPC). In general, the GPC establishes the detailed requirements and regulations for students in the Field listed in this manual.
PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
Graduate School requirements vary by degree program. With the exception of some professional master’s degree programs, the Graduate School imposes no requirements for credits or courses. Research students have the freedom to shape a course of study that cuts across interrelated field offerings, while working within an academic framework developed with a Special Committee of faculty advisors chosen by the student.
The Code of Legislation sets forth the rules governing graduate education as established by the graduate faculty of Cornell University. Students should familiarize themselves with the content of the Code and how it pertains to their programs. The complete Code is available for download
PhD Funding Coverage,
Ninety-nine percent of Cornell’s Ph.D. students are fully funded to pursue their degrees through a combination of competitive internal and external fellowships and research and teaching assistantships. Funding packages include tuition, fees, health insurance, and a living allowance or stipend. Our base stipend rates for fellowships and assistantships are equivalent, consistent across graduate fields, and competitive with top other U.S. universities.
Research master’s and professional degree programs at Cornell provide limited financial assistance. The terms of the awards may vary according to the program. For more information, please contact the individual professional program.
The Graduate School strongly encourages students to apply for external fellowships and grants. These may be offered by government agencies, private foundations, or corporations, and may provide one year or multiple years of support. The Graduate School at the University of California, Los Angeles maintains one of the most extensive and up to date university databases on graduate school funding (GRAPES). Federal loans are also available to assist with tuition costs.
