About PhD Program,
This program offers in-depth study and research training for scholars seeking careers in academia. Programs of study combine major and minor coursework to fit individual intellectual needs and areas of research specialization. Graduates have pursued academic careers at research institutions such as Texas A&M University, The Pennsylvania State University, Arizona State University, the University of California at Santa Barbara, University of Illinois, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, The Ohio State University, and the University of Oklahoma. Students applying to the PhD must have completed an MA by the time they begin the program; students with only a BA should apply first to our MA program.
PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
A background in communication or closely related fields is recommended for the M.A. and Ph.D. programs. Students are selected based on their academic background, research or professional experience, and letters of recommendation.
- Applicants to the M.A. program must have a bachelor’s degree with a minimum 3.25 GPA.
- A Master’s degree is required for admission to the Ph.D. program. Applicants without a Master’s degree who are interested in the Ph.D must apply for the M.A. program.
- Applicants to the Ph.D. program must have a master’s degree with a minimum 3.5 GPA.

- Students entering the PhD program must have completed an MA first. Students without an MA degree should apply first to our MA program.
- All students must successfully complete a minimum of 27 units in the major including: core courses, theory courses, and electives. In addition, students are expected to fulfill their research team, research tool, and dissertation requirements.
- Students must have at least one minor and may take two. The requirements for these are specified by the minor department.
- The Graduate College’s minimum requirement is that 9 hours be taken in the minor department. If the department does not have a specified minor track, the persons serving on the guidance committee from the minor department will specify the required course work.
- Students must take 6 units of research or methods courses above and beyond the major and minor requirements. The tool should consist of some particular specialty that will be put to use in the dissertation research.
PhD Funding Coverage,
In addition to aid available from the University office of Financial Aid, we offer paid teaching assistantships to the majority of students admitted into the graduate program. Teaching assistantships come with a tuition waiver, health/accident insurance, and an annual stipend. Research assistantships, merit-based fellowships, and scholarships are also available. Of the graduate students in the department, more than 95% receive some form of financial support.
