About PhD Program,
The Ph.D. program emphasizes communication as a social science. Graduates are prepared for university positions and careers in government, the media and other organizations as researchers, consultants and policy makers.
Students must demonstrate general knowledge of communication theory and research methods, as well as competence in a core area of specialization. Current core areas include health communication, instructional communication, media and mass communication and strategic and organizational communication.
PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
Admission to the Graduate Program in Communication is highly competitive, as the number of applicants is far greater than the number of available spaces. New graduate students are admitted for fall enrollment only.
Each year, our graduate admissions committee is tasked with the challenge of selecting the best from a pool of highly qualified applicants. We consider all elements of the application. However, per a UK Graduate School rule, students must have a 3.0 GPA or higher from their undergraduate and graduate institution to be considered for admission.

The College of Communication and Information offers a variety of opportunities for graduate students to obtain funding.
The college scholarship application for the Graduate Program in Communication will open in early January and close later in the semester.
Students can apply for an extra eight hours of paid work per week, per semester with approval from the Associate Dean for the Graduate Program in Communication and the Graduate School.
These overloads can be granted for anything that is beneficial to a student’s scholarly or professional development such as research, teaching or other professional/scholarly activities. International students are not eligible for overloads.
