About PhD Program,
PhD students in computational applied mathematics at Rice University gain knowledge in understanding of physical phenomena and in making complex decisions. The experience involves intensive course study in small classes, close interaction with professors and immediate opportunities to participate in seminars and to engage in research projects.
PhD students work closely with Rice CMOR faculty across a broad spectrum of mathematical fields and computational methods, including Numerical analysis; Operations research; Optimization; Differential equations; Scientific computation.
PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
Admission depends on students’ previous academic records, available test scores, and letters of reference from scholars under whom they have studied. Writing samples, portfolios, statements of purpose, and work experience may be evaluated as part of the admissions decision. In general, applicants should have at least a 3.00 (B) grade point average, or the equivalent, in undergraduate work.
- A minimum of 90 graduate semester credit hours of study at the 500-level and above (including thesis credit hours).
- A minimum of one-third of the required credit hours must be completed at Rice.
- Doctoral students must complete at least four full fall and/or spring semesters in full-time study at Rice University.
- An original investigation that is formalized in an approved thesis.
- As final evidence of preparation for a degree, a public oral examination prior to submitting the approved thesis to the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
PhD Funding Coverage,
Financial aid is offered to incoming Ph.D. students in the form of a graduate fellowship. Graduate students seeking a master’s degree are not funded through the graduate fellowships.
The fellowship for Ph.D. students includes a stipend for living expenses from the department and a tuition waiver from Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. Many of our students continue to receive financial support in the form of research assistantships throughout their studies.
