PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA

  • International applicants must hold a degree comparable to a regionally accredited U.S. bachelor’s degree and must have a record of strong academic performance comparable to a “B” or above average grades.
  • GPA: A grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the undergraduate major is required, but requirements may vary among programs and may be higher than 3.0.
  • Applicants for whom English is not their first language must take the TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo exam and have an official copy of their results sent to The University of Tulsa Graduate School. For more information on English language requirements, please review the information below or contact grad@utulsa.edu.
  • Applicants must submit a certified letter of financial support or a certified Confirmation of Financial Resources form.
  • Applicants must submit to the Graduate School a copy of the personal data page from their passport before an I-20 can be issued.
  • GRE or GMAT: Applicant must obtain a satisfactory score on the GRE General Test. Programs in the Collins College of Business do not require the GMAT or GRE exam, but submitting your scores may improve scholarship opportunities. Additionally, some programs may waive the GRE requirement. Speak to an advisor for more information by email at grad@utulsa.edu.
  • Applicants must meet any admission requirements set by the degree program in addition to those set by the Graduate School.

After all application materials have been received, two to three weeks are normally required to process an application. International students who require visas should allow at least four months for completed processing of all paperwork.

Applications and transcripts will be held on file, and admission decisions will be valid for one calendar year.

Applicants whose academic work has been superior are admitted upon the approval of the degree program and the Dean of the Graduate School.

In general, full-time graduate students should expect to pay tuition and fees of about $26,928 for the academic year and living expenses totaling approximately another $21,550. International students not on an assistantship or fellowship must be able to document available funds totaling at least $6,664. Some programs with required summer enrollment may have higher associated costs. Please note: International students are required to pay the International Student fee. All students are required to have documented health insurance.

Application Requirement

Your application will not be considered complete until all the following items have been received:

  • A completed Graduate School application
  • Transcripts from all universities attended(including any community college credit)
  • Statement of Purpose(admission essay).
  • Standard Prompt (500-750 words): 1) Describe your research interests and professional goals. 2) How is TU’s graduate program best suited to help you accomplish these goals? Be specific about how your specialized interests align with TU’s available specialties.
  • Certain programs have customized prompts that are detailed in the Special Application Requirements below.
  • 2 – 3 letters of recommendationfrom individuals who can comment on your academic potential.
  • Most programs require a minimum of two letters with a third being optional, but strongly encouraged. Number of letters will be assigned following submission of online application form.
