About PhD Program,

Whether you’re looking to engage in innovative academic research or provide economic leadership in government and business, Fordham’s Ph.D. program in economics will give you the specialized training you need to make a direct impact on the world.

You’ll work closely with our renowned faculty members, whose expertise extends to the classroom and the boardroom at the highest levels—and whose publishing credits include the best-selling textbook on international economics in the world. You’ll gain a broad knowledge of economic theory and quantitative methods while specializing in one of four tracks:

  • Development Economicsfocuses on evaluating economic policy, analyzing country risk, and assessing human development programs.
  • Financial Economicsemphasizes portfolio selection, risk management, asset pricing, financial markets, and corporate finance.
  • International Economicsprovides the economic and analytical tools to address business and public policy problems that arise through foreign trade, investment, development assistance, and capital flows.
  • Monetary Economicscenters on monetary theory—including inflation targeting and price-setting behavior—and exposes students to dynamic stochastic general equilibrium models and vector autoregression techniques.

 PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,   

  • Understand the historical and modern theories of micro and macroeconomics and econometric theory
  • Deepen their understanding of economic models of the household, firm, and institutions
  • Learn advanced mathematics to create mathematical models of the economy
  • Develop the ability to organize and analyze specialized data
  • Learn advanced empirical methods for data applications in financial markets, international development, health, education, environmental economics, among others through our course work in Econometrics, Financial Econometrics, Applied Micro Econometrics, and special topics such as Machine Learning and Non-parametric Econometrics
  • Learn about the social dimensions of economic policy and about policies to improve equity and efficiency of economic outcomes in a variety of contexts
  • Learn to develop research questions and strategies for addressing them
  • Learn to effectively communicate their research via research posters and presentations in our dedicated Ph.D. student workshops and lunch-time seminars
  • Learn to develop publication quality research through our advanced course-work in Research & Writing and Research Methods, as well as dedicated faculty mentoring

PhD Funding Coverage,

GSAS financial aid packages vary by program. Typically, students receiving our GSAS financial aid packages may expect to receive one year of such aid at the master’s level and three years at the doctoral level: generally no more than four years for those applying without the master’s degree. The distinguished fellowships and certain prestigious external fellowships can extend a student’s funding eligibility by one year.

All recipients of Graduate School of Arts and Sciences funding must be certified by us as full-time students. No recipient of the GSAS financial aid is to hold outside employment without the permission of the graduate dean.
