About PhD Program,

A pioneering doctoral program with an enduring legacy of research in applied linguistics, language learning, and teaching.

The Educational Linguistics Ph.D. program focuses on language learning and teaching as well as the role of language in education. Our questions and concerns are situated squarely in educational policy and practice, informing and informed by interdisciplinary theory and research in linguistics, anthropology, psychology, sociology, history, and other fields.

Our faculty and students are involved in generating research on language and learning in areas such as:

  • Linguistic, cognitive, and sociocultural aspects of (additional) language development
  • Local and global perspectives on world language teaching policy and practice in K-12 and higher education
  • The intersections of disability, language, school–parent partnerships, and education policy
  • The historical and contemporary manifestation of raciolinguistic ideologies that frame the language practices of racialized communities
  • How multilingual speakers use milimodal communication practices – such as gestures, laughter, actions, and learning materials – to resolve miscommunication
  • How language, social interaction, institutions, and the Internet influence what students learn in schools
  • The role of lanugage in all forms of learning

PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,

Admission to Penn GSE requires satisfactory completion of a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. university or its equivalent prior to your matriculation into any program.

The total course units required for graduation is 20. If approved by your advisor, 8 CUs may be transferred into the program; normally these will be electives. Core courses may not be transferred in. The requirements include 5 core courses, 3 research courses, 3 linguistics courses, and your choice of elective courses agreed upon with your advisor. All courses must be at the 5000 level or above.

 PhD Funding Coverage,

The majority of our full-time master’s students receive some form of financial assistance directly from Penn GSE. Penn GSE offers various scholarship and fellowship opportunities to master’s and doctoral students to help offset tuition costs.

The Dean’s Fellowship and Research Apprenticeship provides full funding to Ph.D. students. Support includes tuition and fees, health insurance, and a living stipend. All incoming Ph.D. students receive a fellowship and research apprenticeship package, which covers four years of study and requires that students maintain full-time enrollment. Additional funding is available on a case-by-case basis for those students who wish to continue their research and teaching apprenticeship in the summer months. There is no application for Dean’s Fellowships and Research Apprenticeships; award decisions are made by the academic division based on the application and communicated at the time of the admissions decision.
