About PhD Program,
The PhD in geography is an academic research-oriented degree that primarily focuses on preparing students for academic careers. Many students who already have master’s degrees enter the PhD program; however, as of fall 2015 those who have earned a BA/BS may enter directly into the PhD program without first completing a master’s degree.
PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
The minimum requirement for admission into the graduate program is a four-year BA or BS from a regionally accredited institution. Students entering into the PhD program with a MA or MS degree may apply for advanced standing. Degrees do not need to be from a geography program; however, students whose previous work is not in geography may be asked to complete specific courses that do not provide graduate credit.
Applicants should understand that the admissions process is competitive and based on a careful assessment of each applicant’s file. We can only offer admission to a limited number of qualified applicants to ensure high-quality advising and accessibility to facilities and other resources.
Prospective international students should visit the Graduate School’s International Student page for more information about graduate studies at the University of Minnesota.
Six information sources on which admission decisions are based:
- The grade point average from all prior undergraduate and graduate study. For admission to the program, the preferred undergraduate GPA is at least 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale), unless other information suggests that the undergraduate GPA may not be a reliable indicator of the applicant’s promise. For students entering with a master’s degree, the preferred graduate GPA is at least 3.7 (on a 4.0 scale).
- Scores for the TOEFL/MELAB/iELTS, if applicable. GRE scores are NOT required.
- Breadth and depth of the past program.
- Letters of recommendation.
- The applicant’s statements.
PhD Funding Coverage,
All students admitted to the MA or PhD program, both domestic and international students, are offered a guaranteed funding package, contingent on satisfactory progress toward degree. The funding package provides payment of tuition up to 14 credits per semester, partial payment of the health insurance premium, and a stipend. Summer funding is also part of the guaranteed package.
Students entering the MA program will receive two years of guaranteed funding. Students entering the PhD program will receive five years guaranteed funding. Summer funding is also part of the guaranteed package.
For incoming graduate students, funding is normally provided through teaching assistantships, as well as appropriate fellowships and research assistant positions as they become available. Once a graduate student is ABD, they may have the opportunity to be the primary instructor (graduate instructor) for an undergraduate course. Graduate instructor positions, fellowships, and TA or RA positions are all considered to be part of the funding package.
