About PhD Program,
The full-time only PhD program at Johns Hopkins SAIS will cultivate your expertise as a scholar of international relations. During your studies you will work closely with a faculty advisor to develop a customized academic plan that best supports your dissertation research. You must have already completed (or be in the process of completing) a relevant master’s level degree to apply.
Throughout your PhD studies you will gain a comprehensive understanding of qualitative and quantitative analytic skills, international relations, economics, and regional studies. The program is divided into a pre-dissertation, resident stage based in Washington DC, and a non-resident, dissertation stage.
PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA
The DIA is a practitioners degree where students conduct applied research culminating in a doctoral thesis within their area of professional expertise in an accelerated timeframe.
It is different from a traditional PhD, which requires comprehensive exams and is usually thought of as producing an original body of knowledge in preparation for an academic career.
Applicants must have at least five years of relevant, full-time, professional work experience to be considered.
All students must complete the following:
- Research Methodology
- International Economics
- Statistics and Econometrics
Research Methodology: all students must successfully pass Theories and Methods of Qualitative Political Research and Research Design and Causal Inference. Prerequisites for Research Design and Causal Inference include fulfilling Statistical Methods for Business and Economics and Econometrics.
Within six months of passing the third comprehensive exam, you must prepare a written prospectus of the dissertation and present it in a formal defense that is open to members of the university doctoral community.
PhD Funding Coverage
All admitted PhD students receive a scholarship that covers tuition and stipend funding for a limited amount of time unless they decline this in their application. Students who already hold a Master’s degree from Johns Hopkins SAIS may receive a maximum of three years of funding and students who have a Master’s degree from other institutions may receive a maximum of four years of funding.
