About PhD Program,
The Department of Linguistics is pleased to announce that we are accepting admissions for the PhD program. The application deadline is December 1 for entry the following fall. For more information about the program and the application process, please see below and the Frequently Asked Questions page. If you consider applying to our program, or have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the Director of Graduate Studies, Dr. Amanda Huensch, amanda.huensch@pitt.edu.
PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
We only accept PhD students with specialization in areas in which the core faculty have expertise. These areas include phonetics/phonology, second language acquisition, sociolinguistics, and Hispanic linguistics. Students can receive enhanced training in statistical modeling and data science and are also welcome to take courses in other departments and at Carnegie Mellon University.
Students with a B.A. or B.S. degree may apply for admission to the PhD program. Such students may also earn an MA degree on the way to obtaining the PhD.
Because PhD students follow highly individualized programs and work closely with their professors, only a limited number of applicants can be admitted to the doctoral program at a time.
PhD Funding Coverage,
The Department of Linguistics offers several very attractive funding packages every year to well-qualified applicants for the PhD program. The Department almost never has funding for two year MA students and no Department funding is ever available for the one year MA TESOL.
If a student is admitted with a financial aid package, it can usually be renewed for up to a maximum total of 5 years for a PhD student (or in the rare case we offer funding to an MA student) two years for an MA student, provided that good progress is made in the degree. Both international students and U.S. citizens can apply for financial aid. During their graduate career in order to make them competitive in the job market, we do our best to provide our PhD students with a variety of assignments that involve teaching language, linguistics, and conducting research.
Our financial aid packages compare very well indeed with those at other top universities. Each full-time financial aid package comes with the following:
- A fellowship covering all tuition and fees for the fall and spring semesters.
- Full medical coverage for a calendar year.
- Access to a dental and vision plan for a small additional cost.
- A stipend for two terms of service (fall and spring terms) requiring 20 hours of work per week. Doctoral students are eligible for teaching fellowships. View the amount for each type of award »
Application Requirement,
- Upload copies of your undergraduate transcripts and when applicable, graduate transcripts, with your online application. Certified transcripts and translations of all undergraduate and graduate study are required if you are accepted to the program. We will request these certified copies at the time of the formal admission.
- Three forms/letters of recommendation are required. You should submit the names of three referees with your online application for admission. The recommendation form we ask to be included with each letter of recommendation is available for download as a pdf file once you begin your online application process. Referees should submit their recommendations electronically.
- Career/Research Statement
- A Curriculum Vitae (CV) or resume is required. We need this information to decide on appropriate financial aid packages.
- Writing Sample: Because your success in our program will depend on your writing skills, all applicants must submit a sample of written academic work.Preferably this example will be on a linguistic topic, but it need not be. The writing sample should demonstrate your ability in academic prose and argument.
- If you are applying for the Hispanic Linguistics Program and Spanish is not one of your first languages, you must supply evidence of Spanish proficiency.
