About PhD Program,

The Newhouse School’s doctoral program is interdisciplinary in spirit, with students taking a considerable amount of coursework in academic areas outside the Newhouse School. While certain Newhouse courses are required, the program is sufficiently flexible to provide students with opportunities to pursue their own scholarly interests.

You will be actively engaged in research incorporating a wide variety of theoretical and methodological approaches, and encouraged to present your work at national and international conferences. You will also be active in Syracuse University’s Future Professoriate Program, which provides superior training and mentoring in college level teaching.

PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,

Doctoral students take courses both inside and outside the Newhouse School and develop an area of expertise while working with faculty from across Syracuse University.

Applicants with master’s degrees will be given preference for admission to the Ph.D. program.

PhD Funding Coverage,

Finding the resources to fund your education is a daunting task. We’re here to help you navigate this territory as the first step in your journey toward a career in communications.

Various scholarships, fellowships and instructional associate positions are awarded to incoming Newhouse students to help offset the cost of attendance. Since Newhouse does have limited funding to offer, the majority of these awards are partial and may only be applicable for the academic year (excluding the summer sessions). It is also a competitive process, and all awards are merit-based.

In  addition, U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible for need-based loans issued by the government and facilitated through Syracuse University’s Financial Aid Office. Most students can fulfill their calculated financial aid need through these loan programs.
