Fully Funded PhD in Music at City University of New York

About PhD Program,

Music doctoral students at the CUNY Graduate Center benefit from the mentorship of renowned faculty in a small, diverse program in the heart of New York City.

Our premier music doctoral programs allow students to pursue their passions while honing their expertise. Students study with faculty who are leading scholars, composers, and performers. Giving students individualized support is a top priority, and we are proud of our excellent placement record.

Students in the musicology concentration achieve sophisticated control of the substance, theory, and criticism of both the major issues in music-historical thought and the repertories of the Western music canon and vernacular musics.

PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,

Applicants for the musicology concentration must present a strong background in the areas of music history, theory, and analysis. They must demonstrate promise of superior achievement in advanced study and research.

Prospective students may be asked to come for an interview with the musicology faculty.

On average, programs do not accept more than 15 transfer credits; however, each case is reviewed individually after an applicant has been admitted to a program. Transfer credits will only be evaluated after you have begun the registration process in your first semester as a student.

There are no minimum scores that guarantee admission. Each program takes into consideration all the elements of an application.
