About PhD Program,
The nationally recognized Neuroscience PhD program at Brandeis provides our students with an environment of unparalleled scientific research and training.
Brandeis neuroscientists have access to one of the largest and most vibrant neuroscience communities in the world. Many Brandeis labs and students collaborate with our colleagues at sister research universities throughout greater Boston. Brandeis graduate students enjoy the flexibility to choose the lifestyle that they want — city (Boston) or town (Waltham) with easy public transportation options in either direction.
PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA
Students are considered for admission based on their application as a whole, not simply on grades and test scores. In addition to the student’s academic record (grades and coursework), admissions committees heavily weigh letters of recommendation, the extent and independence of previous work and research experience, and the individual’s statement of purpose. The Neuroscience admissions committee will no longer be considering GRE scores in their decisions. Please do not submit them with your application; the graduate school will remove them if they are received.
International applicants: There are additional requirements for international applicants (non-U.S. citizens or non-permanent residents), minimum TOEFL, IELTS or PTE scores, and important information regarding visas. If the student is submitting TOEFL scores, please note that the Brandeis TOEFL institution code is 3261.
See the Graduate Program in Neuroscience webpage on the GSAS website for more information and requirements.
PhD Funding Coverage,
The Neuroscience program is supported in part through a number of competitive National Institutes of Health training grants. Training grants have supported student research in traditional neuroscience, computational neuroscience, brain and behavior, molecular and cellular neuroscience, quantitative biology and dynamical systems.
Students are guaranteed funding, including a stipend of $38,496 (beginning on July 1, 2023), full tuition and health insurance while they are completing their studies and maintaining satisfactory progress towards their degree. Students in years 1-3 are typically funded by university fellowships or training grants, and in years 4+ by their individual lab.
