About PhD Program,
As a public health doctoral student at Oregon State, you’ll work with faculty committed to health and well-being for all people. You’ll also have access to research and teaching opportunities and will benefit from an accredited program with a strong history of funding students.
With a PhD in public health, you’ll be prepared for a career in research, university teaching, policy analysis and development, or high-level public health positions.
The College of Health offers a PhD in public health with concentrations in:
- Environmental and occupational health
- Epidemiology
- Global health
- Health policy
- Health promotion and health behavior
PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
The public health PhD program consists of a minimum of 109 credit hours, including at least 36 graduate credits devoted to preparation of your thesis.
You’ll take courses in research methods and statistics, proposal/grant writing and in your area of concentration.
You and your doctoral committee jointly determine your specific program of doctoral study. This process allows you to design a course of study uniquely suited to your career goals.
A master’s degree in a relevant field is required for consideration of admission. Those without an MPH degree will be required to take courses in foundational public health knowledge.
No GRE requirement
We join many other programs at Oregon State and other peer institutions across the country who have eliminated this structural barrier to promote a more equitable, diverse and inclusive student body.
PhD Funding Coverage,
Most of our public health doctoral students are funded through teaching or graduate research assistantships, which include tuition remission and a stipend. Others are funded through scholarships and fellowships.
The Public Health PhD program is a 109-credit program that can be completed within 4-5 years on a full-time credit load (except for summer).
Application Requirement,
The PhD program will require two separate applications.
- The first application will need to be completed through the SOPHAS system.

4. Complete OSU supplemental application
5. Official OSU admission decision
