Fully Funded PhD in Public Health at University of Florida Health

About PhD Program,

The PhD in Public Health, One Health concentration will require a minimum of 90 post-baccalaureate credit hours. The One Health concentration is a research-oriented health degree that emphasizes working across public health, veterinary health, and environmental health disciplines to tackle difficult health problems. This program is designed to bridge the gap between various areas of animal, plant, and human health to improve the well being of all species.

PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,   

The PhD in Public Health (for either concentration) requires a minimum of 90 postbaccalaureate credit hours. These credits must include core public health courses (15 credits); quantitative methods and statistics courses (12 credits); Professional Issues and teaching courses (9 credits); concentration area courses (24 credits); supervised research (3 credits); and dissertation research (15 credits) plus student-chosen and advisor-approved electives (12 credits). All Ph.D. students must register for a minimum of either 3 (fall and spring semesters) or 2 (summer semester) credits of PHC 7980 (research hours) the semester they plan to graduate. Recommended undergraduate prerequisite training for One Health degrees include basic biology, chemistry, physiology, and college algebra.   • Bachelor’s or equivalent degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA for the last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework.

PhD Funding Coverage,

Students are only accepted to our PhD program if the department can provide a stipend and tuition waiver. Students are typically expected to pay minimal fees during their tenure in the program. Funding for PhD students may come from intramural (fellowships, department funds, etc) or extramural (Grants) sources.

Application Requirement,

  • UF Graduate SchoolApplication: The application will require input of personal information, previous coursework, and other information.
  • V./Resume:The CV/Resume should contain all pertinent information regarding education, work experience, research experience, publications/presentations, and service and leadership roles.  There is no page limit for the CV/Resume.
  • Statement of Purpose:The statement of purpose should outline your career objectives and detail how you believe those the philosophy and focus of the program you have selected will help you achieve these goals.  If applying to the PhD program, you should also indicate your research interests and faculty you are interested in working with.  The statement of purpose should not be used to repeat information that is already available on your CV unless it helps to explain why you think our program is a fit for you. The statement should be no longer than one page, single spaced, 11 point font, 1 inch margins.
  • Statement of Previous Training and Preparation (PhD applicants only):The statement should summarize the skills you have obtained during your preparation for your selected graduate degree that will enable you to succeed in our program. This should not be a list, but a narrative that describes your previous training and experience and how you can apply your skills to your graduate program.  Experiences can include, but are not limited to, specific coursework, research experience, previous work experience, and other additional trainings. The statement should be no longer than one page, single spaced, 11 point font, 1 inch margins.
  • Letters of Recommendation:Arrange to have 3 reference letters submitted. At least two should be from former professors. If you have been out of school for over 5 years, 3 letters from employers are acceptable.
  • Official Transcripts: Send Official Transcripts to UF. Note: International applicants who have received degree from outside of the US and Canada must utilize the WES Evaluation in lieu of submitting official transcripts (see below).
  • WES Evaluation (International Applicants Only):World Education Services (WES) ICAP Course-by-Course evaluation of academic records from institutions outside the U.S. and English-speaking Canada (if applicable) in lieu of official transcripts. http://wes.org in lieu of official transcripts. This is a requirement and will not be waived.
  • TOEFL/IELTS Scores (International Students Only): To send IELTS scores to the University of Florida Graduate School select E-download option and select The University of Florida.  An institutional code is not required for submitting IELTS scores.  To submit TOEFL scores please use the University of Florida institutional code: 5812.  Note: International applicants whose country’s native language is English or who have attended a college or university in the United States full-time for at least one year, are not required to submit TOEFL scores. Transcripts:

All international applicants must submit a World Education Services (WES) evaluation, http://wes.org in lieu of official transcripts.

English Proficiency:

International applicants must provide proof of English proficiency in addition to the requirements above. To meet this, applicants may submit one of the following:

  • Minimum TOEFL scores of 550 paper‐based, 213 computer‐based, or 80 Internet‐based
  • Minimum IELTS  score of 6
  • Minimum MELAB score of 77
